357 Fore stock Replcement

Post by markiver54 » Wed Jan 29, 2020 9:12 pm

Maybe old news to some, however;
Just replaced the front stock on my BBS 357 rifle. Was intimidated at first. But after learning a couple things, became very easy.
There is a little trick. I could now do it in about 5 minutes.
Do not know how many models are designed the same, but if you find yourself needing to do this, and need help, let me know.

Why did you replace the stock.
I've tried to remove fore stocks but get stalled by unrelenting barrel bands.

Mine, right from the factory was loose. Moved up and down almost 1/16 inch at the receiver. Called Henry, they sent me a new one, but did not like the wood grain as much as the original. Sooo, I took the original off and shimmed it. Perfect tight fit now.
Glad I was able to keep the original furniture.

When you remove the two screws on the strap and slide the strap forward, you realize, there is a dovetail mounted block that at first, seems to limit the forward movement of the stock. If you take notice of the flange on the fore end of the stock, you will notice it has a slight taper on the wood flange. I held the rifle, straight up, in a chair, lever facing me. I then placed my thumbs on the barrel and my four fingers on both hands on the flat ledge of the top of the stock. Opposite pressure popped it right off.

When you remove the two screws on the strap
For clarification purposes he means the front barrel band screws.

I have to send yet more praise to Henry for having the foresight, tapering the flange so that you can pivot the fore stock off.
I'm sure in manufacturing, they installed the stock during the assembly process, before installing the mag tube. It would have to be removed to replace the fore stock if not for that little taper they designed on the flange.
It allows the stock to clear the dove tail mounted block that accepts the barrel band screws.
