They don't. It is a carry over from using steel rods. Mentioned previously several posts back too.

Funny in an odd way, semi related to this topic of cleaning your LR. The 13 pager started out about using "Ballistol Multi-Purpose Aerosol Can Lubricant Cleaner Protectant" for cleaning.
