Scope on Big Boy 357
Scope on Big Boy 357
I purchased the 357 after shooting my friends new rifle, exactly one week later. However the days of iron sights are behind me. I bought the Picatinny mount spray painted it with Rustoleum special gold colored paint. I was surprised at how close the color matched. Then mounted an old Tasco 3X9 32mm with old Weaver rings. It now looks like someones old hunting rifle just shiny and much easier to shoot. I intend to upgrade the scope but need to find one that is the same size or smaller, perhaps a 1X4 or 1X6. But all of the scopes seam to be bigger and larger. However the scope is great on this gun but it might be more fun with custom scout mount and scope.
I would appreciate any opinion, advice or comment. Thank you.

Looks nice. I'm putting a 2-7x34 on my BBS 357 carbine, when I get the time. But - if your scope fits and works well, why change it?

Re: Scope on Big Boy 357
I like old scopes and still use some, but the thing to keep in mind is that optical technology has improved, dramatically, in the last twenty years, even the last ten years. Even a cheap scope, today, can rival or easily beat the top tier scopes from the old days. As long as you can live with the optics on that old scope, go right ahead and use it. Just be prepared to be let down a little if you compare it directly to a new scope.
One of things I do not like on so many modern scopes is the trend to large eyepiece and objective bells. Those large bells at both ends can cause clearance problems when trying to mount a scope as low as possible on a lever gun. Those scopes also just look a bit bulky and unbalanced to my eye when mounted on a lever gun, not to mention being a bit heavy. Some brands are worse than others, though. Nikons, in particular, are big, heavy robust scopes for their size, but optics are terrific. One of the best optical bangs for the buck. Here's a Nikon Prostaff 2-7x on a Marlin.
Leupolds tend to be more conservative in their styling and size, so I like their lower power, smaller scopes on lever guns, such as their 2-7x33, 1.5-5x and so on. Here's a Leupold VX 3i 1.5-5x on our Marlin 45 Colt. This new Leupold is even brighter and sharper than some comparable Leupolds we have that are only ten years old or so. About double the price of the Nikon, though.

I put a Leupold 2-7x28 rimfire scope on my BBS 357. Its small light and the parallax is set at 60 yards which is ideal for a pistol caliber carbine.

Hey, GarySeven,
Here are my 2 cents. No change needed whatsoever, and especially since you said, "....the scope is great on this gun."
The BBB .357 looks great the way you've set it up. And your rifle is the "classic" Big Boy, has the traditional lever-action style/look, and is "retro" per Henry's rifle description. The low bronze rail and and trim older Tasco just add more to this style you & Henry have created.
I'd definitely keep your neat set up going....good job!
Enjoy.
