Perhaps it might be as well to avoid Southwest Alberta. Why take chances?ditto1958 wrote:RanchRoper? I'm praying you are joking!

Hey ditto,ditto1958 wrote:Hrmph. Later this week I plan to test some 35 Remington ammo at the range to see where it shoots. Normally my 336 has XS ghost ring sights, but this task needs a scope. I dug out a Nikon 3-9x40 and put it on the Marlin. It looks like the Hubble Space Telescope on there. Why do scope buyers want scopes that are so big? Older 3-9 scopes were more like 28-33mm in front. New scopes in stores have 40 or 50mm objective lenses, and are designed to look all tacticool. Which means ugly on a lever gun.
A 2-7x scope is really more correct for a lever gun, but for shooting holes in paper at 100 yards, I'd prefer more than 7x magnification.
I have an old Bushnell 3-9x32 scope on my 30-30 Marlin 336. It works just fine for the shooting I do. Maybe I will buy another one on eBay.
If the purpose is the singular task of testing a particular "this or that", what difference does it make what it looks like?
Sounds like your going back to your XS ghost ring sights anyway, right?
Similarly, I want to really try (to the best of my ability) to test the various 22 ammo I have through the H001 and post the results here.
So I took a target scope I had and put it on the H001. When I am done with my little test, I'll take it back off.
Until then it looks ridiculous, but who cares

I don't think it looks ridiculous, it looks like it will hit whatever is in the crosshairs for sure.

Re: Lever Gun Scope Rant
I'm not sure why people don't like scopes on lever action rifles. It might be because we grew up watching westerns on TV and few had scopes on them. But in reality rifle scopes have been around slightly longer than lever actions.

I like the look and feel of a scoped lever rifle but you do need to choose the right scope. Click on the picture and then once more when it opens for a very detailed look.

Re: Lever Gun Scope Rant
Thanks. The top and bottom scopes are vintage Weaver scopes made in the 50's and 60's. The middle scope is a Malcolm reproduction. The vintage Weavers are no where in the same class as modern scopes as far as using but they look much better. They are both 3/4 inch tubes which reduces the brightness and because of the design parallax is a big problem if your eye isn't centered. Repeating the cheek weld is very important shooting these although I use a nose/thumb weld.North Country Gal wrote:Sir Henry, have always loved your taste in lever gun scopes.
