Lyman Globe/Skinner on the Carbine Barrel?
Lyman Globe/Skinner on the Carbine Barrel?
Hi, all,
Am stalking a Brass Carbine-length 45Colt, on which I'd likely put the Skinner Express rear sight.
I really like the Lyman Globe front, but can't figure out what height is needed for the shorter barrel on the carbine.
Any insights on this (so to speak)?
AHB = .404"
AMI = .494"
AUG = .584"
TractorTad seems like the expert on this...

Re: Lyman Globe/Skinner on the Carbine Barrel?
We have a BBB44Mag carbine with a Skinner Express rear and a .494" Lyman Globe on the front - this setup is probably the best guess/starting point for a 45Colt...

I wouldn't call that the starting point, Tad, I'd call the THE ANSWER! Thank you so much, as always!tractortad wrote:We have a BBB44Mag carbine with a Skinner Express rear and a .494" Lyman Globe on the front - this setup is probably the best guess/starting point for a 45Colt...

Do you think this setup would work on a BBS carbine in 357 as well?tractortad wrote:We have a BBB44Mag carbine with a Skinner Express rear and a .494" Lyman Globe on the front - this setup is probably the best guess/starting point for a 45Colt...

The only difference I can think of is the octagonal vs. round barrel, but I'll let Tad render his expert opinion!

I also have the same .494 on the front of my .41Mag and so far it's working great for 50 yards

Re: Lyman Globe/Skinner on the Carbine Barrel?
The answer to that is probably not - We have a BBSCCH 357Mag Carbine with this same setup (Skinner Express/.494" Lyman Globe) and it shoots 2" high at 25 yds using 158g JSP Federal ammo. This is with the rear Skinner peep bottomed out as far down as it can go. A BBSCCH Carbine has an octagon barrel that is slightly thicker at the muzzle than a steel round barrel, so the .494" Lyman Globe would sit a little lower on that round steel barrel - which means this setup on a BBS 357 Carbine would probably shoot even higher than ours with the rear Skinner peep bottomed out. If it were mine, I'd go with the next highest Lyman Globe (.584") with a Skinner Express on the rear.deano5150 wrote:Do you think this setup would work on a BBS carbine in 357 as well?tractortad wrote:We have a BBB44Mag carbine with a Skinner Express rear and a .494" Lyman Globe on the front - this setup is probably the best guess/starting point for a 45Colt...

Another option is to mount a Skinner Low-Pro on the rear/.404"Lyman Globe on the front. We have BBS 44Mag Carbine with this setup and it works well. I would estimate that this setup would probably work on a 357Mag BBS as well. I think we will probably end up putting this setup on our CCH Carbine in the near future...

Thanks! I haven’t decided if I’m going with the globe or just a taller blade from Skinner to go with the Skinner Express.tractortad wrote:The answer to that is probably not - We have a BBSCCH 357Mag Carbine with this same setup (Skinner Express/.494" Lyman Globe) and it shoots 2" high at 25 yds using 158g JSP Federal ammo. Re: Lyman Globe/Skinner on the Carbine Barrel?
I can vouch for the LowPro. Very simple to install and adjust. Completely different 'look' than the Express, so that boils down to personal preference and/or cost. I went with the LoPro as it was my first Skinner and just wanted to make sure it worked for me (and it did). My next will probably be the Express.
