Post by Ojaileveraction » Sat Apr 21, 2018 8:04 pm

Is the side mounted 94-36 lower than the too mounted 336.

I'd like to use the origanal front sight.

What rifle are you referring to mounting a Williams sight on?

Oh sorry. A Zane Grey Century. 30-30. A tapered octagon in a 336 receiver on a pistol grip but stock. The front sight is dove tailed not on ramp so even though it a tall sight it relatively low. With a Williams 336 sight at it's lowest setting poi is somewhere near 400 yards.
With a below max 150 Grainer.
I thought I read somewhere the 94-36 sight mounted lower.

Yes, the FP (side-mounted) is lower. Have yet to need to change out a front sight with this model and have used them on over a dozen rifles. The top-mounted 336 is much more likely to need a different front sight. Not always, but sometimes. About half the time on rifles I've equipped with the 336.

Same here - the 94/36 side mount has a wide range of elevation which is an advantage. Here is one of mine on a mod 94.

Thank you NCG! I ordered one.
I have three 336's. all with the Williams 336s receiver sights. The two 30-30s I had to get taller front sights. The 35 Remington did not need a change.
The ZG has a tall, almost half an inch, thin blade with the smallest bead on top. Gives a great sight picture even "way out there" where other beads turn into manhole covers.

I am however becoming a fan of the basic, square 'blade' front with the Williams sight as it allows me a 'flat' spot with which to set my target on for a '6:00' sight profile as opposed to having a 'bead' front which are great but make it a little more difficult with the 6:00 sight position. This is a recent swap out off of a Winchester I have and I am really liking it but opinions may vary!

Usually when I hear of some one that has to change the front sight to a higher one is when using a Williams top mount peep. The side mount rarely needs the higher front on a Marlin unless it is a Marlin Glenfield or any of the models that use the dove tailed low front sight as a lot of the store brand Marlins had. The Zane Grey model has a fairly tall front and should work fine especially with the side mount. I don't care for the top mount unless the gun is new enough that it is not side drilled for a peep. I don't have a problem with my Zane Grey it has a Leupold 1-4x20 straight tube on it with Weaver rings and base. :)
