elevation adjustment rear sight Model H001T

Post by Redstickboy » Sat Dec 16, 2017 10:38 am

Feel somewhat embarrassed to ask BUT what is the proper procedure for adjusting the small, sliding piece with the white diamond on it? Is it just a "fine tune" adjustment after getting close with the ramp? I can't remember where I saw how to do it so I am asking for any assistance with this. It probably won't improve my accuracy but at least i'll know how to do the adjustment!

[wrong]Maybe I'm missing your point but in my experiece Buckhorn sights don't "fine tune". You got the up and down ofe the ramp for elevation and drifting in the dovetail notch for windage left and right.
The white diamond can be reversed to be plain black. [/wrong]

Any fine tuning for me was a sight picture adjustment and practice, practice, practice.

Don't feel embarrassed - it's a good question. You can adjust the sights on an H001T for elevation by either moving the sight elevator (quick and easy) or loosening the screw and moving the white diamond insert up or down (not so quick and easy). I guess you are right in that the insert can be used as a "fine tune", but I bet most of us don't mess with it because it's kind of a tedious process to adjust the insert for sighting in a rifle. It is good to know, though, that if you max out the elevation (up or down) with the elevator that you still might have some adjustment left on the insert...

Tractortad gave you good advice. I move the insert up and down just to see what was involved. I did leave it up a little from factory just to see the notch better( old eyes) not for fine tuning. Did not seem to make any difference in my shooting.

Don't feel embarrassed - it's a good question.
And a PITA!
Whoever chose the rear sight for the Henry rifles needs to be buttstroked! Sorry but the little thin blade with the offset (and hard to access) set screw is a cheesy design more reminiscent of something on a Rossi than a Henry! I replaced mine with a later style off a Winchester 94 and while it was a 100% improvement in the sight picture it is a lower profile sight than the stock one and had I kept it on my Henry I would have had to get a lower front sight to bring the POI up - and I really like the stock front sight. The blade on the stock sight is too thin and is not thick enough in the 'U' groove to allow for the front to be concaved to break up the light and reduce glare. Also there should be some easy movement available for the blade for fine adjustments. If anyone plans on any 'quality' shooting with their Henry the rear sight will need to be replaced.

Thanks for all the prompt, helpful feedback. I may fool with the small adjustment just because I can! Don't intend to try to be that accurate with the rifle. If I can get some rounds in a decent group at 25-30 yards I might try to make an adjustment with the thin blade but...!

I adjust that little diamond blade all the time on my Henrys. Is it a PITA? Yes its kind of hard to get to but I now have a good screwdriver for doing it. I simply put the barrel end on the tailgate of my truck into a pad or the rifle case and get to it that way. They often come set clear down to the bottom so I raise them up a little as I can see them better that way. I wish Henry would just put skinner sights on all there guns and be done with it. Even if it meant raising the cost of the guns a little. Al

Don't worry about getting older and still doing stupid stuff. You'll do the stupid stuff as always, only much slower. Hold my beer and watch this.......

I wouldn't necessarily support Henry putting a skinner on all their new rifles (as not all like a peep sight) but just a higher quality buckhorn would be an improvement.

Tractortad instructions are right on. If you look carefully at the white diamond top and bottom, you will notice one has a "V" notch and the other has a "U" notch. I now only have the buckhorn sight on one rifle and I prefer the 'U" notch with the round bead front sight. If you are patient, you can really fine tune your rifle. Like others have mentioned, I have switched most of my rifles to Skinner rear sights (they are not cheap).
If you go to the Henry website and go to the drop down menu under "Own A Henry" you will find rifle maintenance videos. Many of them have a "Sight & Scope" video.
