Front sight project for 1873 carbine finished...
The plan was to make a .125 brass post sight to go along with the rear sight that I had opened up to .180. Hopefully making it easier to get on target in various light conditions. Maybe a bit big if you want to hit beer cans from 100 yards but it should work well for general use.
So had to make a fixture to hold the barrel band type sight. Just a little milling and drilling later and it seems to have turned out great. Made it same height as the rear height of blade that had to be cut away.
Reinstalled sight band and now easy to see and get on target! Will get down there sometime this week and try it out.
Yeah I could have bought a brass bead sight for it at 80 bucks but this should work just as well and cost nothing but time.

Well if it does the job I'll put some shine on it! Actually that was simplest way to go on that design sight. You could mill the thin blade part completely flat and then cut a slot for a new thicker brass blade.... a lot more work.

Very cool. Good work. Kinda reminds me of my long gone machinist day’s.

any sight I can see clearly is a good one ... build nicely done, it requires skill way beyond my paygrade

I like the sight but your "fixture to hold the barrel band type sight" is very impressive to me.
