Skinner iron sight for long ranger

Post by tryn2hrd » Tue Nov 26, 2019 7:45 pm

My long ranger came without iron sights. Would i have to send rifle back to Henry to get sights installed or could Skinner do it? I just like the idea of having the choice of having a scope or iron sights.

Did you know your particular LR came without sights? I thought all the LRs came with a folding rear and a ramped front.
So you have no rear dovetail or holes for the front ramp on the barrel? (This is not unusual on certain rifles)
If this is in fact the case the intent was for a scope only.
To install open irons you would need to have someone cut a rear dovetail and drill and tap the front of the barrel for a ramp and this would not really be cost effective or practical.

Yes this rifle came without holes drilled and tapped on receiver end of barrel and no dovetail cut at end of barrel.

Well, with no irons from the factory it should have a provision to mount a rail for a scope.

.
There are 2 versions of the LR for each caliber. Sighted (with iron sights) and unsighted (provided with Skinner 2 piece scope bases)

With that rifle, using a Skinner base with the integral rear peep, and having a competent gunsmith add an appropriate front sight ramp and bead would give you that option, using detachable (Talley?) rings that fit that base. And it wouldn't cost all that much. I say competent on the gunsmith choice, just because hardly anybody does that work these days. I got lucky when a young gunsmith who shares my interest in old Swedish Mausers set of shop near here, and switched out to a lower front sight for me on a sporterized carbine, so I could use a "NIB" Lyman rear peep I found at a gun show a while back. Eccentric, I admit ;) .
