What would be the best choice for a scope for a 357 single shot Henry ?

Sherman, now you've done it....the answers will be many and varied. The consensus will be something like, you'll have to choose what you want and what works best for you. I have used a 1.5 to 4.5 on my 357. It works well out to 75 yards. Beyond that it's a little iffy. I am considering a 2 to 7.

Good luck

I put Skinner Peeps on both of my Henrys and love them; however, there are several members who prefer scopes and I'm sure you'll be hearing from some of them. You may also want to check out this section of the forum:

What Cofisher said. Depends on your eyes, your intended use, your most likely distances, etc.

I've put a 1.5-4X20 Leupold VX Freedom on my BBS and it's great, but I agree with Jim, 75 yds is probably its limit. But, in my mind, for the size deer I might encounter here in MO, 75 yds is all the distance I'd want to be covering with a 357 round.

If you're not hunting but just plinking, then maybe you want more reach. 2-7X33 would be great, in that case. I have that VX Freedom on my 30-30. Great scopes.

first, welcome to our forum, delighted to have you join .... please feel free to jump into ongoing conversations; as well as, to create more of your own .... as to a scope selection, I tend to fall back to the old premise that says with normal ranges going with 1 power for each 10 yards you anticipate shooting .... with our 100 yard rifles we use Nikon 3 X 9's .... that said, you should most certainly go with what ever brand and power suits you best ... please take a look at our How Many ? thread (link below) and add your Henry rifle(s) to our community's total

I'm going to throw in a vote for fixed power scopes on the Henry single shots, for just one reason: It's easier to mount them low as possible when you don't have to contend with a variable's power adjustment ring on the ocular lens assembly. Of course, you lose the power change option, but I find on other rifles that I set my variables on 4X and forget it anyway ;) . On three Henry single shots I used a Leupold FX 6X on a .243 and FX 2.5X on a 45-70, and am working on a Redfield 2.75X on a 30-30.

I found I was doing the same thing with my variable power scopes. But I was also able to mount the Leupold I have on my LR with as low as possible rings I could find. The objective almost touches the barrel, and a hammer extender was needed. The contour on the top of the LR where receiver transitions to the barrel makes low as possible possible.

I have a couple Burris E1 3X7 scopes on rifles that I really like. One is on my Henry .327 the other on my my Ruger 10-22. I have a Sig 2X7 mounted on my Marlin Camp 9. All seem to be good optics for these rifles.

I use a Burris 2-7 X 35 Slug Gun scope on my .357. It is a nice, clean looking compact scope with great clarity.
