New AW 357. Need sight advice.

Hi everyone. New guy here. I just picked up my Henry all weather 357. I know for sure that I want to change the sights. I am a right-handed shooter but left eye dominant and I am not picking up the bead very well and it has been 20 years since I used a semi-buckhorn anyway.

I was thinking about my options and they include

1. Skinner peep sight and keep the front bead (I don't think this option will help me much)
2. A silver or chrome color scope that is budget-friendly. I saw a used silver trophy 3-9x40 on eBay but is that maybe overkill for 357? What options might you guys suggest for a scope?
3. Hi-viz or similar fiber optic sights. Likely maintain the barrel mount but open to the idea of receiver mount.

I don't regularly hunt and the rifle is mostly for training my kids in the future and my personal enjoyment. However, I did get the rifle as a potential deer rifle inside 150 yards if someone were to invite me out for a hunt. I don't think I want to use my AR-15 for deer hunting.

And on a side note, can anyone suggest a sling?

A little about myself. This is my 2nd rifle, my AR was my first. I have always shot pistols/revolvers growing up but my rifle experience is quite limited, but looking forward to learning at the age of 38. I used to work in a gun store and became familiar with the rising cost of ammo. This is partly why I selected 357 over a rifle round. I actually wanted the 45-70 model but the cost of ammo is crazy for that round.

Thanks and I look forward to talking here on the forum. A few pics attached.

Welcome from the Show-Me-State. The AW .357 magnum is a sharp-looking rifle, and a great caliber. Your reasons and planned use are all quite sound...good choice! I think this rifle is one of Henry's best in its unique design.

Enjoy the Henry, and the time you spend on the HRF.

welcome indeed, delighted to have you join us .... I hope you will read and post often .... your Henry 357 can serve equally well as a hunter, trainer and plinker .... in the hands of someone who can shoot it is a very capable deer rifle .... its low recoil is great for training youngsters .... as to sights, I do prefer a scope ... our Henry 357 is shown below .... please take a look at our How Many ? thread (link below) and add your Henry to our community's total

Welcome to the Forums and congrats on your new Henry! 357 is a very versatile, very fun caliber, and you'll find lots of info here on every aspect of what you're considering, from sight options to ammo choices to hunting parameters. Like many things in the firearms world, personal preference comes into play as you make these choices, so take your time and dig into the sub-forums (Sights and Scopes, Hunting/Large Game, etc.).

I put a relatively unobtrusive scope on my 357 BB Steel shortly after I got it, and it improved my shooting and satisfaction a great deal, but Skinner Peep sights (and their competitors) are great, too. Depends on your intended distances.

Hunting deer beyond 75 yds or so with this caliber can be a challenge, but, again, depends on your situation. Here's a great article to start with, but the interweb is full of such info:

https://www.ballisticstudies.com/Knowle ... agnum.html

Amazon is chock-a-block with slings, and I've picked up a couple from Levy Leathers:

https://www.amazon.com/gp/offer-listing ... dition=all

Here's a pic of the Leupold VX Freedom 1.5-4X20 I've to on my BBS.

Keep us posted on your progress and don't be afraid to ask!

Welcome to the Henry forum! Oh, you'll be liking that AW .357. Fine rifle. As for sights, the Leupold 1.5-4x20 that ESquared shows is perfect for that rifle. I have a Weaver Classic V 1-3x20mm on my Henry .357 and it helps a lot. Looks exactly like the Leupold. And Natchez.com has them on sale for $139.99. Good luck and please keep us informed on your progress.
Edit: Almost forgot. If you scope your Henry, you can purchase from the "Henry Store" the Talley integral mount/ring set-up for $49. This is a superb way to scope your Henry.

This was a very good article. Covered a wide range of ammo options, and a quite informative analysis of the .357 magnum as can be used to hunt deer. I think this should be included as a "sticky" reference under our "Ammunition" sub-forum. Lots of .357 Henry owners on the HRF already, and I'm sure there will be more joining.

First, welcome to the forum from the TV, Oregon!

A scope that goes out to 10x or 12x is a good choice for out to 150 yd shooting. A scope is also a good choice when eye sight limitations make other sight options difficult to use. I have a Vortex 1-6x that gives good finesse visibility out to 75yds and a Leupold 3.5-10x that is likewise to about 135yds.

For slings, check out the offerings from Brass Stacker https://brassstacker.com/Henry/
They have a sling section for Henrys, but I bought a sling from another rifle category I liked better. So shop the whole site.

Finally enjoy your new 357 Henry!

I've not seen your left dominant eye issue addressed. How have you been dealing with that? Have you considered shooting left handed? I have no experience with it. My son shoots right or left with good results. Good luck with your efforts.
