Recommend a sight setup - Big Boy Brass .357

Post by ozark75 » Sat Dec 29, 2018 6:12 pm

I am looking for a new sight setup for my Big Boy. Its a .357 Brass 20 inch barrel. My eyesight is a little less than perfect, and I'm looking for something to give me a little better / faster sight picture. I don't shoot anything much closer than 25 yards and nothing much further than 50 yards. I think I am liking the idea of a peep sight.

I'm seeing a lot of posts about the Skinner Peep sights, but are there other options (brands) worth looking into?

Pros / Cons for receiver mount vs barrel mount?

Thanks

Welcome to the forum from CT, ozark. There's a link to Skinner Sights in the forum Banner. Henry includes one on their Small Game Carbine and recommend them for all of their rifles. They have some great options and lots of us have installed them (me included).

I have the BBB in .357 and .41mag and both wear a set of Skinner peeps and a Lyman front globe-I am 60 years old and the peep sights have made iron sights fun again.I have the ring installed in the front globe so it's like looking thru 2 rings at the target.

Pros / Cons for receiver mount vs barrel mount?
Barrel mount will give you a clearer rear sight picture but shorter sight plane.
Receiver mount will give you the preferred longer sight plane but that is going to depend on your 'shootin' eye'.
I had to have cataract surgery on my right (shooting) eye at a relatively young age and (for as bad as the cataract was) and I chose to have a long distance lens for the replacement so I could loose daily wear glasses ( I occasionally need readers now for the smallest print) but can mostly go without them.
Bottom line is with my receiver sights (on four rifles) the aperture is a little blurry but not bad and the front sometimes is a 'double image' but that has gotten better over the last couple years .
Regardless I think my results speak for themselves as this recent three shot group with a 26" winchester 30-30.

Thanks for the replies, and the welcome! Sounds like Skinner Peep Sights reciever mount is the way to go.

I use peep sights on both my Henry big boy steel and my marlin 1894. They are mounted on the receiver, my Henry is mounted on the rear of the receiver and my marlin I have it mounted on the front part. William's FP336 model peeps
