New Toy: Bore Sight

Picked up a new toy today. Last I was at the range, my 336W seen to shoot low right. Was it me? I was not sure. Used the bore sight, and it showed an alignment of low right (the bore sight was not snug as I would like though). So, it kind of confirmed my scope alignment. I may get a chance to go to the range and confirmed it this weekend. I paid more for it than I would like. But, it is at a LGS.

I did learn something about my Marlin rifle/scope package. The cross hair moves opposite than what is indicated on the scope. The arrow shows up. But, the cross hair moves down. That may have came into play as I was attempting to zero the scope.

It’s early, and I haven’t had coffee yet, but since the scope is mounted on the rear of the rifle, by lowering the rear of the gun, you actually raise the poi, no? With iron sights this is a given, I’m just not sure on how it works in a scope, as I’ve never questioned the direction of movement on the turrets.

I have not had to align a scope before. I was just trying to follow the directions that came with it, which stated to move the cross hair in the direction to line-up with the target. Nonetheless, all is good, and I am happy.

If your POI is low, the knob on the scope is marked “up”. Move the knob in that direction and that will cause the POI to shift up.

Well, I made it to the range yesterday to see how this bore sighter aligned the gun. My POI was low. It seems the sighter is 180 degrees opposite than POI. After I zeroed the gun, I put the sighter back on. And, it was aligned about 8 inches below POI. My POI was about center at 100 yards, which may explain why I was adjusting opposite of the scope knobs' direction. So at best, the sighter my be good for getting on paper, unless I am missing something.

I bought a relatively cheap bullet casing style one that you drop into the chamber. I didn’t find it to be very accurate. I’ve found bore sighting to be more of a waste of time and energy than not. I’m sure it has to do with which tool and which operator though. If you start your sighting in from scratch (without bore sight) at 25 yds, then move to 50 and then 100, you should be able to be on paper and dialing in the 100 yard zero after maybe a half dozen shots at 25 and 50.

that's what I've always done .... I've been intrigued with one made by Wheeler but haven't any hands on experience with one
