dovetail filler
dovetail filler
I'll be removing the buckhorn sight from my new octagon barrel .22 Magnum and would like to fill the dovetail slot with a nice looking filler. Any suggestions as to where I could find such a slot filler?

Here are two links from recent Forums chats re. dovetail fillers:

http://www.rangerpointstore.com/rifle-b ... l-fillers/
I 'd bet there are other products out there, as well.

Re: dovetail filler
I had suggested the ranger point ones as well in an earlier post that now is missing. Not a fan of the skinner ones as they are not flush mount.

Re: dovetail filler
But I have an octagon barrel - the ranger point models seem to be for round barrels. Or, did I miss something?

Re: dovetail filler
The round dovetail fillers look great on steel Big Boys, but they don't work for the octagon barrel models.
I never really liked the offerings from Marbles or Skinner, so I bought some 3/8" steel dovetail stock from Brownells and filed/ground a steel filler for an octagon barrel. I used some cold blue to try to match the barrel bluing, but it hasn't really worked - not dark enough - needs more bluing work - but I think it looks better than a standard "oversized" filler or a blank slot.
I also tried making an octagon filler out of wood and then staining it to match the stock on a Henry - it's a lot easier to make than a steel version, but I think the steel looks/performs better...
I think there is a market for ocatagon barrel dovetail fillers - I hope Skinner or Ranger Point come out with some in the future...

Re: dovetail filler
The skinner one has never bothered me, and I couldn't justify the cost difference between it and the rangerpoint version (I know, where to draw the line with this crazy hobby, huh?). In the scheme of things, even the Skinner one "disappears" to my eyes.

I settled on a Williams https://www.midwayusa.com/product/34994 ... inum-black
The price is right, it sticks up a bit, and has a set screw. Mostly the price is right.
