Skinner Peep Sight on Receiver

my skinner on a BBS 44 shot high also with the stock front post...I just bottomed the bead on the post at the 6 0clock and was spot on out to 70 yrds , raise to the center for 100.....That globe sounds interesting HMMMMMM..I used one on a Sharps Highwall (was not mine tho) I was amazed at how well it worked.

We've got Skinner peep/Lyman Globe/Lee Shaver insert setups on six of our seven Henrys - they work really well for us. I think they are almost equivalent to a good low power scope. If you already have the Skinner "Bigboy Express" rear sight on your BBS 44, you probably would want to go with a Lyman 17A .494" Globe front for shooting 44mag ammo. Our BBB 357 and BBB 44 Carbine both have that exact setup...

Off hand, standing from 53 yards with a larger center target (2 5/8 x 3 1/2"); I thought 3 shots were taken.

Results at 50 yards from bench rest shooting Marlin 795 22 caliber, high velocity CCIs using Tech-Sight sights (aperture rear, nice thin post for front sight; both are adjustable!).

Marlin 795 (.22 semi-auto rifle) from 53 yards with Tech Sights (peep rear and post front).

Conclusion: I am satisfied that in my hands at 53 yards the Henry 357 Steel Carbine fitted with Skinner Express Rear Sight and front post sight, will do it's job. I haven't tried 75 yards yet, but I struggled to find the red dot (1x1" square approximately) with my vision. Given my off hand shooting at 53 yards, I need much more practice before I will feel comfortable with accuracy. I will move to a larger center target for off-hand shooting and see how that goes before I consider a scope for my Henry. I had 1-2 failures to feed with the lever at the range today, but that was operator error. I did have to send the Henry back for service because the extractor caught on the receiver a couple of times at the range two weeks ago. Henry did some demurring and polishing and improved the functioning. New to Henry and customization, this has been an interesting and satisfying experience.

Note with Marlin 795: Accuracy with the Tech Sights was good without any adjustments needed for windage/elevation out of the box.

Great shooting! That's a real nice rifle you have, and your off-hand work would get the job done. I'd be happy with those targets.

I have my 44 mag henry with the skinner receiver mount and it shoots high about 5 inches, I just aim at the bottom of a 12inch target at 25 yards and can get in the 10 ring. The same issue with the 357 receiver mount skinner sight. I will have to return to the range and try 50 yards and recheck my numbers. I used the sight calculator on the skinner site and I am now sure about the size for the front sight I need. I will say the open sight on my 44 were good I could keep all my rounds in the 10 ring at fifty yards.

good to hear you have figured out your 44 .... have you tried different ammo to see if it groups any differently .... do want to welcome you to our forum .... please take a look at our How Many ? thread (link below) and add your Henry to our community total

I went back to the range this morning to recheck my sights at 50 yards. Same results, the 357BB was shooting about 5 inches high and the 44 BB was still shooting 6-7 inches high. I went looking at skinner for front sights. I found the 0.070 sight but could not find a add to shopping cart. I did e-mail Andy now waiting to here back.

I wanted to get better groups with my big boy 357 than with the buckhorn sights so I installed receiver Skinner sights. With just the receiver sight and Monarch 158gr SJHP I grouped very high at 25 yds. with the aperture post 1 1/2 or 2 turns from bottoming out. I used the Skinner front sight formula after talking with Andy at Skinner to determine that I needed a .200 taller sight which was the .760 tall. That took some getting used to but the rifle looks great. I also got the extra aperture barrel blank and the elevation lock knob.

When I got to the range again I used a rolled up towel as a bench rest and the .040 aperture to sight it in. At 50 yd I grouped less than an inch with three shot groups. I got about 2 1/2" groups at 100 yds. though I was still setting the elevation. I think there was two post turns between the upper and lower groups. The circled center group shows it dialed in. The remaining shots show a group with the larger standard aperture, just the ghost ring as I used my remaining ammo and another caliber I was sighting in too (why waste a target?).

The longer sight radius along with the small aperture make this as accurate as I need and this upgrade was well worth the price. My next range trip is to try offhand shooting with the standard aperture.

The white blade sight got lost in bright light so today I added some Testor's fluorescent orange and hope to get it out to the range soon.
