You can tell a lot about the character of a man...
by the way he treats those who can do nothing for him.

With a good pair of wooly leggins', a good horse, a handy knife and an 1860 in the scabbard an old buckaroo is ready for anything.

Re: Cowboy Gear
Well, driving conditions are very poor this weekend due to big snowfall, so could not take my guns to the range today. But that didn't stop me from polishing them up for a photo, and in the aptly titled "cowboy gear" section. Some of my favorite cowboy gear right here.
My Henry 1860 and Colt Richards 1871 both in 45 Colt. Plus a couple of my favorite knives, a Schrade Uncle Henry Golden Spike and an Uncle Henry big Bowie....

Re: Cowboy Gear
Over the last year or so I have experimented with carry positions on my saddle for my rifle. I have tried left side facing front & rear, and right side same thing. I prefer this position the best I think. Rifle fits well under my leg, and it is angled enough that I don't have to worry about falling out on a hill. It packs quite well like this and does not interfere with the horses movement at all.

Re: Cowboy Gear
excellent photo .... years ago I played with trying to find the best location .... my need was for hunting .... it was easier for me to get the rife out of the scabbard when mounted on the right with the stock forward .... the problem was, I never could find a mounting angle where the barrel would fit comfortably .... in the end, I went with pretty much the same mounting position and angle as in your picture .... in addition, I can see a major benefit for a working carry where roping is involved

Another beautiful photo, RR.RanchRoper wrote:It packs quite well like this and does not interfere with the horses movement at all.
This may have already been asked, if so please forgive the same question. Have you ever fired your rifle while on horseback or with the horse(s) nearby?

Nearby yes but not up close. Horseback I never would. Too high risk if something goes wrong.
