RR, how many head of cattle do you all have at the moment?
At one time my brother and I had 35, not counting calves.

None. Just help out a buddy of mine that works for a local rancher. Wife and I just have horses at the home place. Usually a few big cattle moves a year, 300-400 at a time, guys are calving right now of course, branding season coming up, then sorting pairs to move to summer pasture. Checking periodically until fall works start. Try to spend as much time horseback as possible...Badger can't do those big days anymore, old man time catching up on all of us. But Dakota is still good to go. From 2005 to 2014 I worked for a big outfit around here, 8,000 private acres and another 18,000 lease and forest reserve. Badger, Magic, Dakota and me rode some big country those years. A lot of miles, and some pretty darn good ones too. Ran around 1,000 yearlings for a few years until the wolves moved in. Then the owner switched to cow/calf and we had less losses. 800 pairs. We used to run 40 bulls in open pasture in the summer. Roping and treating those in open country is an adventure that stands alone from any others. 1 ton of freight train with an attitude. Usually tried to have 3 riders on bull treating days. I guy on the heading rope, 1 on the heel end... and the guy who drew short straw gets to needle them. Yup, me and my little horse herd have had some high times.

Sounds like a good life RR. Know what ya mean about those Bulls.
But I've seen a couple of Crazy heifers also, we had one for a few years, no one could get near.
She ran through and over more fences than any other we ever had, named her Crazy Mary.
We did finally get her pinned up once and she went to the sale right after that. ;)

Throwback pic from back then....our mare Magic and of course Badger's ears...wife and me out moving cows. One time I put a 14 hr day on that little mare, and she was at the gate wanting to go the next day. Couldn't figure out why I wouldn't take her....haha, lots of heart.

Thinking about it, I doctored a foot rot bull one time. Stretched him out between 2 ropers. I was the ground guy and after needling him, I pull slack in the head loop while the heel end guy kept both back feet up off the ground. As I walked back Badger to get back on him, the bull kicked loose and headed straight for me. I no sooner hit the saddle and Badger was already moving sideways fast and that bull head butted me in the stirrup. He was trying real hard to knock us both over. Luckily Badger was very quick on his feet and got out of the way. I remember the other 2 guys laughing their heads off. Cowboys do enjoy watching a good wreck...

That mare Magic had some thoroughbred in her. I had never roped any livestock on her until one day in the big pasture. I had dragged a log around the pen and thrown loops at the wooden dummy a bunch but one day had her for work, and we had to treat a lame cow. About 1600 lbs for the first pasture roping experience, but man she took right to it. I roped 2 back feet and she just dug in and stood her ground. I was so proud of her. Tons of try. Lost her in 2015. She was the one who wore the Santa hat for pics every Christmas...haha, a real people horse.

Ok, enough old cowboy rambling...
