My wife has driven the road to the sun, and says she was never more terrified in her life. Oh yes, anytime in September we can get a snowstorm. It's a short beautiful summer here. Just an hour north of Glacier is Pincher Creek Alberta. A good old timey cowtown at one time, but now has a Walmart.

Ah, you are most fortunate to look up and enjoy such a spectacular sky, RR! ;) And the "ground scenery" (mountains) is very nice, too.

Your comments brought some nostalgic memories for me from many years ago, when you talked about a "dark & beautiful night sky." Growing up just six miles from the Chicago city limits, there was always a "lit-up-sky." Still, there were times when I saw a dark sky as a kid whenever my Dad & Mom drove us on some 2-lane country roads...we kids called it being "in the boonies..." and it was nice to get away from the metropolitan-Chicago bright lights.

But even a more fantastic view of such a dark & beautiful night sky was during my last travels in the former Soviet Union back in the 1980s. It was an incredibly long journey, but filled with so many new vistas. Travelled by plane from Moscow to Soviet East Asia, then changed to travel only by bus! I was definitely in the "boonies," in the middle of nowhere. Visited the capitols of several republics -- Turkmenistan, Tajikistan, Kyrgyzstan -- and approached close to China and Mongolia yet to the east. Much of those huge distances were uninhabited except for very small villages along the roadway, and there for sure were no city lights! The night sky was an incredible sight to behold with the absence of any man-made light. Never knew there were so many stars up there! And also saw for the first time really how "huge" the night sky is! That expanse is hard to put into words. :) I won't ever forget that travel time.

Gosh, sure was a long way from home to enjoy seeing a beautiful dark night sky!!

RanchRoper wrote:Thank you, Alberta still has a lot of wilderness & some open prairie but as with any place, it is slowly filling up with people. My wife and I often remark how people from cities move out to open, sparsely populated areas and then light up their property with a big yard light. There goes your beautiful night sky. Our place is so dark at night you'd never know it's there and we like it that way.

The mountains in the distance in the first 2 pics & bottom left are Waterton Park and Glacier Park on the Montana side. A huge section of Waterton was burned out last year in the fires. The mountains in the other pics are the Livingstone Range.

The bottom left pic has a telephone pole sticking up, and the distant mountain right behind it is Chief Mtn.

It says the Old Man river Brewing company is a good place to get a beer and eat. Maybe someday I need to climb aboard that iron horse I have and take a trip to the North.

I guess because of your snow photos from this past Winter I had thought you were a lot further north.

Here's one I found from a few years back....Badger and I on the left moving some cows with a thunder storm threatening....this is near the Waldron Grazing Co-op in southwest Alberta.
