I was ten when I got Jackie. She was about two years old. She taught me more about cattle then I knew. She was very eager to please me and just knew what needed to be done. We would gather the cattle up on open range in Oregon and she would go out scouting. Then a half hour later she would return with a half dozen cattle and she did this all on her own.

I read a book a few years ago about Australian Sheep dogs. Seems you don't train them but rather let them grow up around other trained dogs. Dogs that were trained by other dogs. If you have one that doesn't appear to be a go-getter chances are it was raised by humans and wasn't around other working dogs.

I don't have a dog, but there's usually one or two around when we move cows. There's lots of bog around so it's handy to send them instead of riding horses thru it. I did bog my mare down one time a few years back and we had to pull her out with another horse. Picked seaweed out of my gear for a week.
Open range gathering in Oregon sounds pretty good to me!

Not actually photography but we have these 2 posters mounted and on the wall in our home.
The "Pines" one is a reprint from the 50's but the real gem is the other one. An original from 1939. Both in great condition. Fun stuff, they always make me smile(y).

Those were the days, Gene Autry on "Covered Wagon Theater" on the 12" black & white TV on a Saturday morning, 1950's. We can still get some of his movies on certain "family" type channels here. Neat old posters.

Just put horses out in round pen for a while. Method to it though; the big paint had the rope wreck last weekend so I left loose ropes all over the pen on the ground. Want grass? Relax and walk over the scary ropes. Working so far! :D

Anytime they are allowed time to figure it out for themselves, it's always better. It went good, he was walking all thru the ropes and couldn't care less after awhile. Next time we rope a critter he'll be a little more confident.

Some photos my wife took. Summer 2011 or 2012, not sure. I rode for the a7 at Bob's Creek 2005 to 2013. They ran yearlings in these photos, then switched to cows-calves due to mounting cattle losses to wolves. The last couple of years running yearlings we were coming across wolf kills 2 or 3 a week. But the ranch is so big, with lots of timber country, the wolves were a tough manage.
