First kill

My first kill is not a proud one, it was not one were I had to travel to the beautiful outdoors to enjoy nature and be proud of an edible harvest. Instead it was the call of a husband saying "get your gun I have a possum trapped in the basement".
The better half was throwing the garbage and coming back in when he saw this not so little guy in the yard. He took a step towards him and possum ran to our basement. By the time I got there he was holding it at bay with his .38 in one hand, and cell phone in the other. I set up and put 3 shots in him before it went down . My poor son scared because Mom ran out of the house with loaded rifle and told to not come out of his room until we came in.

And with that growth, the tale will say that it took the entire 5-round magazine of a 12-gauge shotgun using 3" magnum slugs to take it down.... ;)

I once had to get a mama possum and her youngun's out of my garage.....lots of snarling & hissing went on that day. Glad no one got bit or anything.

Better half is being funny about it today, he's talking about a possum tooth necklace, and a hat.

Just curious: three shots with what rifle? Sounds like a monster possum.

Great story! Can't wait to see pics of the necklace and hat!

Good riddance!
Next to a raccoon a possum is the nastiest creature the Lord ever strung a gut through!

Opossum are some rather tough critters, and absolutely nothing to tangle with if cornered or injured.
They can take several hits from a .22lr and walk away, if the hits aren't properly placed.
Their thick skulls can actually cause a ricochet with soft lead bullets like a .22.
Body shots are far more effective.

Here's a fun fact for you.
Opossum are in the marsupial family, and as such, cannot contract rabies, meaning they also can't give you or you dog rabies.
Their blood won't support the rabies virus.
Still nasty animals. Scavengers, so they do provide a service, but still nasty.
