Grouse hunting 2023 - 2024

Post by daytime dave » Sun Dec 31, 2023 10:52 am

Our grand daughter was dropped off yesterday. As I was talking with her father outside, I saw a large bird trotting along by my trailer. It was a grouse. It ran across the front yard to some tall pines along the border with the neighbors.
We decided that if he had time, he'd take the dog out and we would hunt.

Late in the afternoon, we took the bird dog out and hunted. I brought the Stoeger 20 gauge coach gun with some #8 shot shells. Boy was that the right choice. We started out at his house, walked the edge of his property line to the top of the hill, across our common boundary and into our neighbors where we have his permission, and then across my pasture and back to his. Almost all of it off a trail. It is so thick, even without leaves, that I could hardly see more than 10 feet in front of me. Snow had stuck to all of the branches, but very little on the ground. Those short barrels were just the ticket in that brush.

No grouse, or other game spotted. I enjoyed the outing and will continue hunting on days that I can for the next few months.

As my name might lead one to believe, I love Grouse hunting. It's why I love springer spaniels. I've got several covey's of bobwhite's, wood cock, and a couple of grouse in my little riparian woods.

I don't have the heart to hunt them. I love hearing them and watching the pup flush them.

I'm hoping that a new knee might enable me to "Partridge" hunt a few more times but it'll never be the same without Buster who we lost to a tumor a few years ago.

Dave, one of those 20ga. coach guns will be on my radar for this year.
Sounds like a good time out and about there.

I've gone out with my step son and the dog and some on my own. It's been no game. I went out today to trim up some more often used trails and hunt too. I trimmed up some brush, but didn't see anything. As usual, I took a brush friendly gun, the 20 gauge and the 63 kit gun.

Ha ha. That's my Filson "Fudd" special. I love it.
I went out again today. I kicked up a rabbit as I walked a tree line. He took off into thick stuff and I shot where he should have been. I guess no one told him where he was supposed to meet the load of shot because when it got there, he wasn't anywhere to be found.
