Great first deer! Where are you located? Did you get the deer local or somewhere else?Troutfly6971 wrote: ↑Thu Nov 21, 2019 11:19 amBought two Henry's in the past year. A 44 mag and a . 308 Just got my first deer with the Long Ranger and it was a dandy. IMG_20191119_230809762~2.jpg

Re: Hunting success pics: Post what you got!
Hey guys, got a little hunting tale.
Been warm around 60° and pretty windy all day, a small drizzle this afternoon, and rain threatening.
Well around 3:30 I decided to go down to the la casa.
So me and ole J C Higgins, Sears M 45 35 Rem. jump in the Chevy and ride the couple hundred yards.
I park right beside the door as I'm pretty sure when I leave it will probably be raining.
So I get all settled in and I'm catchin up with you guys and checking N & South.
Playin with the phone I brought one B&T so I've had a couple drinks, maybe half.
Look out the north window and down in the lower east I see this deer easing along the edge of of the field.
I'm pretty sure just by the way he's coming that it's a buck, probably 200 yds.
I pick up the binos and yep small buck, I've seen his scrubby antlers on a couple of the cameras.
So he heads right across into the little thicket that separates the two,
and when he comes out the other side he's closer.
He eases out at first, then trots then pauses, then he starts walking kinda fast.
Then he pauses again, right there I know he's out about 30-40 yds. past the big Hickory that I know is 98 yds. according to the RF'er.
He looks away from me and then starts on across, and I just made a low kinda clearing your throat sound.
When I do he turns towards me, I've already got ole JC propped on the window sill, I pick the spot and bang and believe I heard the thump.
Anyway he went straight down, I got up out of the chair stepped out got in the truck and drove right to him.
Was still kicking and had to finish him off but it didn't look like he'd went any where at all.
Ok the special part is that that 200 gr slug was one that Jim had cast and sent to me some of quite a while back.
Also there is a 35 Rem shell in the butt cuff that has some of Jim's ashes in it also.
Jim was a good friend of mine that passed back in Feb of a heart attack.
Then I had to take him to a processor, this year they want to check all deer for CWD.
None found near us so far.

I'm sorry to hear of the loss of your friend. That was a great story. It sounds like he was with you for this hunt.

first congrats on taking the buck .... genetically the herd in your area will be better with him gone .... my complements on what had to be a 130 - 140 yard shot .... very well done indeed .... delighted to hear there haven't been any signs of CWD in your area

Re: Hunting success pics: Post what you got!
J in the past several years that is mostly what I have been trying to do.
There were a few older bucks around with some quite inferior antlers,
with quite a few younger ones around also.
I have noticed the last year or so not so many, so I am certain that I have at least made a dent.
The small buck I got last year with the pistol is probably the best one I've taken around here in several years.
As far as the CWD is concerned, they found one deer last year in the far south west corner of this county,
I live on the east side of this county and a bout a mile from the next county.

Congratulation on the buck and hopefully no CWD issues.
So far none found Oregon and we hope it stays that way.
I'd be prepping the smoker for venison jerky soon!
