MS 2019 Deer season

Post by GunnyGene » Mon Sep 16, 2019 8:06 am

I've started seeing deer on my property in the last week. 2 grown doe this morning in the back yard within rock throwing distance of the house. Don't usually see them this early, especially as hot as it's been this month. Shaping up to be a good season here. Here's the MS season details:

I'm in the NE Zone.

I've gotta ask, what is primitive weapon hunting? Never heard of deer hunting with dogs either, sounds like i'm missing out on some fun stuff down there!

in our part of the country "Primitive Season" equals black powder season .... hunting deer with a pack of dogs is very common in eastern NC .... most of the time hunters surround an area and turn loose a pack of dogs .... most of the time hunters are required to use shotguns .... that's not a state rule, usually hunting club rule .....

I'm sure hunters will do their own homework, however, FWIW, hunting deer with dogs is restricted in the entire western part of North Carolina.

very true .... years ago we were told that the reason was the elevated body temp of deer being chased by dogs were prone to develop deadly pneumonia after being exposed to the cold water in rivers and lakes .... don't know if that's a fact or not ..... below is a map taken from NC Hunting regs at this link ===> http://www.eregulations.com/northcaroli ... zone-maps/ .... no dog hunting in the yellow counties in Western NC ... permitted in the brown counties of Eastern NC

Usually it means bp, but rocks, clubs, spears, and atlatl is also allowed. There are actually a few tough hombres who use spears and atlatls around here. Same guys who go after hogs with a big knife. Parts of MS still haven't quite caught up to modern tech yet. ;) We also have a alligator season, which is a lottery draw for residents. We get some pretty big ones even this far north. 10-12' and upwards of 600lbs is fairly common.
