Lucky on the Last day

Post by JayZuv » Mon Dec 10, 2018 12:22 am

It was a tough deer season in WNY this year to say the least. Spent day after day seeing nothing but gray squirrels. Today was my last chance so i went to one of my most consistent stands. Most shots are pretty long range so I left the Henry's at home and took my .450 bushmaster. First thing I had a doe walking the ridge at 150 yards, dropped her dead in her tracks. Great start. By the time I had her taken care of it was only 8am. So, grabbed the .44, and went to my woods on the opposite side of the road to see if I could fill my buck tag. This spot is right on the edge of a clearing in the middle of some real thick stuff where a .44 is perfect. Not 30 minutes later I look over and a nice buck had appeared out of thin air broadside in the clearing at 75 yards. As I got my gun on him he stepped into a bit of brush again but I trusted the rifle would punch through it. Sure enough it did. Turned out I had mistaken part of the brush as his body and ended up hitting in the neck, but dropped right there nonetheless. One final shot to finish him, and have plenty of meat for the year. Crazy how hunting works, seeing nothing for weeks, and then getting two in a couple of hours on the last day.

That is awesome Jay. Congratulations. That’s the kind of hunting I can only dream of as here in Az we only get one crack at them with firearms for about 8 days. It’s even better you got him with the Henry and a brass one nonetheless.

Congrats on your hunting this year, which ended with a great double harvest! Glad you kept at it even through your final day.

Your winter photos surely tell the story well. :)

Congrats on the success. Yesterday was a gorgeous day to be in the woods in WNY even for poor suckers like me that didn't fill a buck tag but that's OK. I am not really a meat hunter. I did want to pop the cherry on my Henry 45/70 though.

Great tales from the woods, thanks. Always crazy how they just appear, isn't it?

Thank you all, one of those days you just think back and can’t believe things happened the way they did. As you all know hunting can be a mighty frustrating event, and this season was full of it that’s for sure. bmur yes the snowy days in wny are my favorite to hunt, however cold they might be.

Nice looking buck. Congrats I wish I could say I got lucky, but didn't even get a shot. I saw 6 deer total of 3 weeks hunting here in central NY. I have till next Tuesday with my Flintlock so there is still a chance.
