Not really hunting

Post by John M » Sat Oct 27, 2018 4:37 pm

All our kids are going to be home in November for my 67th birthday. Some for up to 2 weeks arriving from Australia and around NZ with the Grand children. The freezer allways has venison and pork but I wanted something different. I took Henry into the paddock with the buck alpaca's and selected a 2yr old. My load with the 400gr Speer at MV 1677 took him at 30yds high in the neck ( to save meat ) it just about took his head right off with no blood shot meat. I have him hanging in the chiller and will butcher it next weekend should be prime eating. The skin will make a very nice soft rug.

I'd love to have you write (and post pictures) of the process you'll use to make that skin into a rug!

per Spock, fascinating .... having zero personal experience with alpaca meat to draw on, I had to look it up .... "Lean, tender and almost sweet, alpaca meat is nutritionally superior to many of its red meat counterparts. Lower in calories, fat,and cholesterol, this high-protein, exotic meat is beginning to appeal to those seeking out alternatives to domesticated meat like beef or pork, and even wild meat, like venison."

Wow, fascinating is almost too limiting. Great pics and a great story. I, too, would love to hear/see the rug-making story. Thanks for sharing. A great visit is in store for the family!

Unfortunately there will be no rug making story. We have brain tanned a few hides but none have really been a total success, suggestions that the wife should settle down in front of a fire and start chewing to soften them has met with a total lack of enthusiasm.I have two deer hides and now two alpaca hides in the freezer so will get them done professionally.

John have a look at the home tanning kits that are available, should be a few options and most are fairly simple to use.
I am using the leder brand kits that are the same as the old Ledreitters kits that were available here in Aus decades ago. Results are quite good certainly far superior to any home recipe.

Wow that got the old brain cells working and sent me out to the man cave for an archeology dig into the forgotten corners. I wonder if it is still ok.

Nice find
Not sure but if you have the original paper instructions still in the box hold onto them as the new leder kits don't come with anything other than what is on the bottle.
The Leder kits still come in almost identical packaging and the same fleshing knives, you can buy the 500ml or 2.5L bottle of formula and lube on there own as well as in a kit. Nioa distributes in Aus not sure who would be looking after NZ but it should be available.
From memory the 500ml kits are good for 6-7kg skins.

If you decide to have a go yourself I dont mind answering questions where I can. Far from an expert but have done a bit with them. Had a few surplus fallow skins in my shop for sale, no trouble selling them and actually had a few people talk me into tanning stuff for them after looking at the ones I had done.
