45-70 draws blood

Post by Jrprock » Wed Nov 22, 2017 7:58 pm

Hit this buck at a stepped off 180yds. He was quartering away. I held just above his spine and a couple inches in front of his hip. Missed all the yucky stuff at the rear and destroyed the liver and lungs. Missed the heart altogether. Bullet was lodged just in front of the lungs inside the rib cage.

He arched up like crazy at impact so I knew it was a good hit. He ran ~50 yards and turned to look at me. He was close to the edge of the field and the light was waning so I took another shot. He dropped like a rock. This shot was at ~220yds. He was dead from the first shot but just didn’t know it yet. I rushed the second shot and hit a front leg.

Speer 400gr soft point. 45gr RL-7. Retained weight of 385

I’m still kinda stunned that it worked out as well as it did. I’d love to say that I’m that good of a shot but that second shot is probably closer to my true ability.

I was shaking from nerves and fatigue. I had to belly crawl to close the gap as best as I could. The lay in the prone position and try and be as steady as possible.

Now I’m not complaining, just marveling at my luck!

hey, I'd rather be lucky than unlucky any old time .... that said, luck didn't put the cross hairs on target at the instant the trigger was pulled .... years of practice, preparation, hope, dreaming, visualizations, desire, and determination combined to put the bullet where it needed to be

Congratulations on a nice buck with the 45-70 at impressive distances. Thank you for the recovery of the bullet, displaying it and giving it's retained weight. That helps a lot. Nice pictures of the family helping share in the moment. Very nice indeed.
