I stopped at five this year.

Post by DsGrouse » Fri Dec 29, 2023 8:16 am

Sorry for the belated posts. I've been working, and hunting like mad since the release of book one.

I started the year off with a nice buck during muzzleloader season. He was an old buck, a survivor. I found a broad head in him, the arrow was gone. The arrow had gone through his liver and ended at the spine just above the gall bladder. Yet, the old timer lived long enough for the liver to heal, and the scar tissue and fat to start encapsulating the broad head.

To the left of the broad head is one of five .177 air rifle pellets I found in between the skin and his rear rump. Someone was repeatedly chased out of a garden...

The downside of the broadhead in the buck was that it was right on top of the gall bladder; when he went full arse over the tea kettle after being shot, he landed on his back. The gall bladder ruptured, tainting a fair amount of the meat on one leg.

This one ran quite a ways. Single lung shot...

I took my last deer of the season, a yearling, with the 357 big boy x using 125grn Sierra HP. Five was enough for us.

All in all, when cut with pork, we ended up with 185 lbs of meat.

The 357 and spear LT in 7.62x39 performed very well. I still dislike hunting with muzzleloaders.

Congratulations on getting your deer. Plenty of meat for the year.
