Decisions...

Post by JayZuv » Thu Nov 15, 2018 9:51 am

Opening day approaching this weekend here in NY. As excited as I am I just cannot decide which rifle to take with me in the woods! I love my .41 but the .44 is a tried and true deer killer. At the same time, my trust win. 94 has done me well for the past few years as well. So, I just can’t decide which to carry? I also considered carrying my .41, as well as the 94 in the event that I have one just in that range where I need a scope, and the 94 is set up for that. Not sure if I want to haul two rifles through the woods among everything else. But let’s hear your thoughts on this!

Depends on distance(s) and surroundings for me. What's your longest shot likely to be, and how likely are you to have to take your longest shot? I know it's hard to guess, but if you're hunting in familiar territory, go with your best hunch.

Beyond that, it gets down to the psychology of what rifle do you have the most confidence in and shoot the best (at least in your mind)? Just based on your post, sounds like the .44...

the bottom line is, the only important preference is yours .. ;) .. we have a Henry 44 and a Winchester model 94 30-30 .... our 44 has a scope, the 30-30 doesn't .... my decision would be based on which rifle has the type of sight that I need for what I'm hunting and the conditions .... under most circumstances I'd go with the scoped rifle

.
If you're going to be doing a lot of hunting/hiking around, choose one. After a while one will get heavy enough. Me, I'd probably choose the scoped one. Maybe not ideal for short range, but you'll have your bases covered if you have to make a long range shot.

Like JEBar says preference is yours. If you like the 41 take it. The 41 will do the job without a doubt.

Don't worry about getting older and still doing stupid stuff. You'll do the stupid stuff as always, only much slower. Hold my beer and watch this.......

Thanks guys. I'm thinking I'll use the Henry's in the thick stuff, and save the 94 for a few of the more wide open spots on my land. I wish you all luck this hunting season!

I took both my deer rifles out on Thursday morning. 7mm-08 Ruger bolt gun with a 4-12x40 Nikon and laminate stock (not terribly light) and my BBS Carbine in .357 (Skinners and light). I chased a big buck into the tight stuff with the Henry, but after tracking him for a while I lost him. Then my buddies truck broke down, and we had to hike 6 miles in the snow back to camp. He had 3 guns along. It sucked... If you are going to be in open country, go .30-30, and if it’s tight, go .41 or .44!
