Spring has sprung. Get out and shoot your Henry
Does anyone hunt with their .45 Colt Henry?
Re: Does anyone hunt with their .45 Colt Henry?
Have configured my BBS45 and worked up loads for this year's coming elk hunt in the deep, dark and piney woods.

What is the max range you will take a shot at an elk ?

360g hard cast bullet at over 1300 fps - about 75 yards. That is not very far relative to my region but in the deep & dark near summit canyons of the Cascades it is.Kitch wrote:What is the max range you will take a shot at an elk ?

all too often matching the firearm to the game and hunting conditions seems to be something of a lost art .... taking an elk with a 45LC would most certainly become a treasured memory

Have to think of many additional rationales to tell the wife unit so I can get "approval" for more firearms.
Buddies and I have crawled thru the thickets many times with 45C Rugers and T/C Contenders with 300g hardcast. Sometimes its successful. I wanted a little more range.

I know this is an older thread but Wingnut, what was the overall length on that 360gr load you shot in the Henry?, bullet profile etc. Because I was unaware you could run a bullet that long through a Henry. I run such loads in my blackhawk and if I could keep the same load for the carbine it'd be happy. I am assuming you have to modify the carrier, correct?

I have a Marlin Cowboy in 45 colt, and am shootin 255 cast boolit over 10.0 grs. of Unique.
It's pretty impressive on the 8" gong at 75 yds.
Will carry it some this Fall during our deer season.

I have not, however the 45C 250gr round at 50 yds is a thumper. I am sure if you hit where you're supposed to, that critter is going down. Aim would be the ticket.

Whew! wingnut, I have to know: who makes the 360gr hard cast? And where is that 1300MV coming from? What manual?
Not doubting here, but, man, that seems steep. Thanks.
