Yes, ricochets can and do happen with pellets. If the pellet doesn't flatten, completely, you risk a ricochet.

Some of the self-sealing plastic targets specifically warn against the use of pellets for that reason. Be careful with soft surface targets. Can happen with metal targets that move, too. Every great once in awhile, I'll get one with metal spinner targets. Stationary targets with hard surfaces are the safest because pellets always flatten. Any give to the target can cause a ricochet because the pellet fails to flatten and can glance off at an angle.

My bullet trap will eliminate any ricochets. The fence is at a slight angle from the covered shooting area but is currently piled with more boards so I can't shoot from there. That slight angle should deflect any bullets to the side. There is some give on the metal targets.
