Thanks Vaquero, especially the Ruger load. Love the steel, Let Freedom Ring !Vaquero wrote: βTue Nov 12, 2019 9:47 amI load 9.5-10.0 of Unique over either a 250, or 255 gr cast for my Marlin Cowboy and the Rugers.
My 357 load is 9.4 hrs Blue dot over a 180 gr fn cast, very accurate at 100 yes out of my long barreled Rossi.
I know either round will sure swing the 8" gong pretty good at 50 yds. Especially the 45

This is an occasional load, but still a favorite in my Rossi. 20 grains of Alliant 2400 under a powder coated NOE 454-241-RF-HP gives me close to 1700 fps and destroys water jugs. Weight retention is not good.

Note that Black MZ distributed by Alliant is a black powder substitute and has it's own recommended load data.runnin n gunnin wrote: βWed Nov 13, 2019 8:59 amThanks Fortshoter, I appreciate the info and will be trying them out. For my Alaskan revolver it can be 11 gr. of Unique or 20 gr. of Alliant 2400 with the 250 gr. XTP bullet. For some smokey fun 26.5 gr. of Black MZ with a 250 gr. MB bullet works very well !
For my mild .357 loads a 125 gr. XTP with 8.5 Unique works well.

Roger that, good to know. I am going to pick some up over the holidays and see if I can make my 45s smoke !fortyshooter wrote: βWed Nov 13, 2019 6:39 pmNote that Black MZ distributed by Alliant is a black powder substitute and has it's own recommended load data.runnin n gunnin wrote: βWed Nov 13, 2019 8:59 amThanks Fortshoter, I appreciate the info and will be trying them out. That is a snappy little load in those 4.5+" barrel's But they will handle them, or should say (mine) will.runnin n gunnin wrote: βWed Nov 13, 2019 9:06 amThanks Vaquero, especially the Ruger load. But in the Cowboy sweet.
Actually the 10.0 unique load was suggested by a Henry owner from a Fla. friend, that was...
backed up from another friend who used the same load in his Henry carbine.
Good luck

Quick question Fortyshooter. You said that Black MZ is a black powder substitute. When I clean my pistols, do I clean them as I would for Black Powder, or is it considered smokeless and clean with good ole Hopes?fortyshooter wrote: βWed Nov 13, 2019 6:39 pmNote that Black MZ distributed by Alliant is a black powder substitute and has it's own recommended load data.runnin n gunnin wrote: βWed Nov 13, 2019 8:59 amThanks Fortshoter, I appreciate the info and will be trying them out. As far as cleanup....clean like smokeless and I use Ballistol which works very well.
Alliant has stopped selling Black MZ due to low sales. Sportsman Warehouse was the only source I found that still had a lot in their warehouse and at 10 bucks a pound! I bought 6 lbs. and it should last me a good while.
Contact Alliant and they will send you a powder load chart for most common calibers. They only list ONE recommended load for each caliber and warn not to change bullet weight or powder load up or down.
They do list 2 loads for .45 Colt at 250 and 300 gr. RNFP lead. 26.5 gr. ONLY for the 250 RNFP.
The powder is large flakes and I load by hand using scale weight and a black powder measure to load the powder to my scale.
Please contact Alliant for specific load info.

OUTSTANDING ! ! ! Thanks Fortyshooter, very much appreciate the info. I just went on Sportsman's website, sure enough 9.99 a pound. Ordered up five pounds that will be here on the 21st. Re: Whats your favoirte loads for 45 Colt and 357
Next week will be reload week. I have the family coming out for the xmas holidays, everyone has a Henry, Vaqueros, Blackhawks, etc. I have a lot of work to get to.
I want to thank everyone for your input on your favorite loads. I wanted to burn up my remaining 100 rounds so I can maximize on brass next week and try some of the favorites you all listed.
I had three jugs that needed to be recycled, so I filled them with water and had at it.
I was shooting my .357 Big Boy with 13.3 grains of Aliant 2400 pushing 158 grain Hornady JHP XTP's. This has been my favorite plinking load.
Mission accomplished, jugs are duly recycled !
