45 lc Henry 300 xtp mag question

Post by wewcos » Thu Aug 29, 2019 7:31 am

hello ladies and gentlemen,
thanks for the add here! i have picked myself up a 45 lc big boy brass and looking for load data on hornady xtp mags. my lyman has 0 data on the 300 gn jacketed and didnt find much info with google. i made a dummy round and it seats at 1.625 and works fine in the rifle, no closing or feeding issues. would anyone have any books with load data for this bullet? i have on hand , 231, 296, unique, bullseye, h110 , 3031 and a slew of other powders. again, thanks for the add and any info !

CT_shooter, thank you so very very much for that info! i will make up a couple rounds and see how they do. i was questioning the .452 size in jackated bullets in the henry as well. only info i had seen online was someone had posted a reply from henry about not going over 270 gn due to coal . ill find out later this morning if it still seats to cannulure with the charge. thanks so much brother!

I'm sorry, Wewcos. I made a mistake. The 300 XTP Mag bullet is not listed for 45LC. It is for the 450 Bushmaster, which sadly follows the one page devoted to the 45 LC. The bullets Hornady lists for 45LC are the 225 grain FTX (with a special case trim length of 1.215) and the 255 grain FP Cowboy lead bullet. Please do not use the data I provided (I will delete it immediately).

I went back to the Hornady 9th book and located the 300 grain XTP MAG referenced there for the 45 Colt Blackhawk Handgun (or T/C Handgun), but it specified that it could also be shot from Marlin 1894S and Winchester Model 94 rifles, as well. Your Henry should be just fine, too. It only listed one of the powders you mentioned, Win 296. Starting at 17.9 (1050 fps) and max at 21.0 (1300 fps). The C.O.L. is 1.655".

Personally, I stick with the .451" XTP. I had over-pressures with Sierra .4515's. YMMY.

Here are some links to look at (all cautions apply):

Looks like CT has helped out here with his book Im not sure which edition I have but I will look tonight. I have had great luck with HS-6 and I would not be scared to try 2400 either.

Thanks so much guys ! Def. Not a lot of data on it which usually means something lol. Im NOT a risk taker when it comes to reloading but have had henry tell me the big boys will handle the +p and buffalo bore loads but woild NOT go beyond that ( no surprise there for any manufacturer) . I will try 2 or 3 with the 296 and report back saturday with findings. I loaded up some hms 250 leads over 8.5 gn of unique and they did ok at 50 yards at 1.60 . I just literally couldnt see the 100 yd bull at 50 yds or focus on my front post. Ill be 51 sept 30th and looks like gonna have to scope it and everything i own for that matter :(

I'm very interested to learn what you find out. My go to 45 colt load is with a 250 grain XTP over either 16 grains of 2400 for plinking or 20 grains of 2400 for hunting, but my dad gave me a box of 300 grain XTP mags for Christmas. I wasn't sure if the 1.655 COL would cycle in the Henry's and I haven't got a chance to try it out yet. Keep us posted! :D
