45 lc Henry 300 xtp mag question
Re: 45 lc Henry 300 xtp mag question
Greyhawk , i made a dummy round on the xtp mag 300 gn and to cannulure i get 1.625. I havent loaded any powder yet but at 1.625 it feeds and cycles no issue whatsoever.

Ok, so made a couple more dummies at 1.655. DONT TRY IT IN YOUR HENRY. Lol. They will jamb up. Not short enough to clear from magazine and come up into chamber. So we're at least that far into the process :p

1.642 is the farthest out i can seat and crimp and feed without hiccup. Not sure im brave enough to try it and leave the range with a ruined henry or worse. What you guys thoughts?

Re: 45 lc Henry 300 xtp mag question
Ok, so anyways, its just not in the cards for our henrys and 300 gn xtp mags. Even with a good solid crimp at 1.642 , after chambering 2 or 3 times, bullet is getting pushed back to 1.634 . Im just not the risk taker. Sorry guys for all the posts. Thank you to everyone who replied!

Re: 45 lc Henry 300 xtp mag question
Great conversation! OK.... Just to throw a monkeywrench into the mix... Hornady 10th addition on page 955 lists 45 Colt Ruger only loads. In their category for 300 grain bullets they list the 300 grain XTP mag at a COL of 1.655 (we all agree that this wont work in the Henry without altering the firearm) BUT, the regular 300 grain XTP is listed at a COL of 1.58, so this may be an option for those of us who are interested in the 300 grain.wewcos wrote: ↑Thu Aug 29, 2019 9:37 pmOk, so anyways, its just not in the cards for our henrys and 300 gn xtp mags. And I did find the 300 grain XTP's (not mag) on the Cabela's website today. Just some food for thought!

Re: 45 lc Henry 300 xtp mag question
Greyhawk , my plan is to get some of the regular xtp and check those for sure. It was fun to check it out for sure although a tad disappointed. I should have checked more before i got the xtp mags, now i need a another rifle to to use up 50 bullets ,) picking up a scope for it tomorrow and still absolutely love the henry. It will take down anything i ever plan on hunting with it at 50 yards and probably even 100. So either a new rifle or a matching pistol like i have for my 44 mag bb if i ever figure out how to upload some photos, i made 3 display cases that didnt turn out half bad at all for all 3 henrys . Made out of oak, couldnt find walnut anywhere around locally. I will keep this post updated when i pickup those reg xtp 300's. I have an old hornady manual somewhere but after moving almost a yr ago i cant find anything but the lyman 50th i bought.

I have a 7th edition Hornady manual that I took pictures of that 300 gr page. I can post that pic should you ever decide you would like to go ahead with that project

Don't worry about getting older and still doing stupid stuff. You'll do the stupid stuff as always, only much slower. Hold my beer and watch this.......

Re: 45 lc Henry 300 xtp mag question
The buck in my avatar was taken with my Henry .45 colt and 250 grain lead bullet. I was using Buffalo Bore 250 grain Deer Grenades. I took two deer that year with the Henry .45 colt (one while wearing only my long johns!) The one in the avatar was about 30 yards away and the long john deer was about 80 yards away, neither deer went more than 100 feet before dying. Last year I hunted with my 45-70 and 300 grain handloads, I also shot two deer that year and the 300 grainers were impressive to say the least. Once again neither deer went more than 100 feet. Here are some range pictures from out at the range the other day. My youngest daughter is going to hunt with my Henry .45 Colt this year so I made sure things are set up for her. these pictures were groups with 19 grains of 2400 under 250 grain XTP.wewcos wrote: ↑Mon Sep 02, 2019 12:32 amGreyhawk , my plan is to get some of the regular xtp and check those for sure.
