Not sure what Ed is using Evan. But IMR 4895 or H4895 along with IMR 3031 and H335 are good powders in 30-30.

Don't worry about getting older and still doing stupid stuff. You'll do the stupid stuff as always, only much slower. Hold my beer and watch this.......

A Hornady Lock N Load Overall Length Gauge along with the appropriate Hornady Lock N Load Modified Case are a great help in determining overall lengths.
Candeling bullets is a learning curve in itself.

I've shot the 125 gr ballistic tips out of the MX before with good results.
Never tried to see how far, but at 75 yes. they sure grouped. :D

Local pawn shop has one in the stainless version. Its a JM gun. I looked at it online with some interest but I have located a CCH Henry that I really like alot.

I tried trimming and loading 150 gr spire points for my 788.

But found the 160 gr Hornady shot better.

Take a look at this 30-30 round. See anything different?
Ok - it's loaded with a 150 grain Spire Point bullet.
I have been cleaning up my loading desk & re-arranging it and stumbled on a bunch of these I have no other need for so I loaded them up for my 30-30s.
Actually I have done this before and its kind of a fun departure for the 30-30 as the SP bullets will give a little more velocity, shoot a little flatter and give the 30-30 a little more effective range and will demonstrate how much accuracy your rifle is capable of. Some dedicated 30-30 hunters do this regularly knowing the advantage of a spire point bullet for hunting.
The DOWN side is it turns your rifle into a single shot as the extra length of the SP bullet will not feed through the tube of a Winchester - I don't know about a Henry but I suspect they most likely will not either. On the same 'note' loading single shot is not a so much of an issue if just target shooting, or even varmint hunting as well. Heck look how many OWN a single shot rifle. Just because it's a 'repeater' doesn't mean it needs to be!
Anyway if you 30-30 reloaders want a change of pace give it a try sometime!
For a single shot 30-30 this should be standard practice.
