H4350

Post by Bad Bob » Sat Jun 01, 2019 1:13 pm

I have found that 40.0 grs. of H4350 with a Hornaday 143 gr. ELD-X bullet to be very accurate and deadly on Texas whitetails to 150 yards.
This in a 6.5 Creedmoor Long Ranger.

I'd like to learn more about the 6.5. I have pretty much settled on a 308 SS, but wow! That 6.5 is a screamer.

The Creedmoor has developed quite a following in the past several years. It is often used to compete in long range target shooting events.
I have absolutely NO interest in target shooting or long range hunting. What I like is it shoots a heavier bullet than the standard 130 gr. load for a Winchester .270 with recoil similar to a .243 Winchester.
Since I can get "all of the above" in a Henry Lever Action Rifle, what's not to like??
Compare the ballistics chart for the .308 with the Creedmoor for an eye opener..

The Creedmoor was a recent addition to the Long Ranger line-up, so you're one of the few owners of one here on the Forum. Look forward to hearing about your range reports and reloading experience.
If not for long range targets or hunting, what will be your primary use for the caliber in the LR?

Well I have to amuse myself some way.

I definitely see the draw of the 6.5cr over the .308. Less recoil.

The LGS has a BLR in 308 at an attractive price but the recoil stops me.

The recoil of the 6.5cr, in a lever gun to boot, sounds like the perfect rifle for shooting 500 meters off hand.

I own a small low-fenced ranch in far West Texas.
The ranch is populated by whitetail deer, a variety of exotics, turkeys and a few varmints.
In Texas, it is legal to hunt over bait (corn and protien feed) dispensed by timed feeders. The typical method is to hunt from a fixed blind situated to take advantage of terrain, wind and weather conditions and game bedding areas. The distance from blind to feeder is known to within 1 yard, so very little guesswork is necessary.
In a given season, the number of shots taken = game killed is a reality.
That is the situation for my use of the Long Ranger.
Not very exciting but it is what it is...

You've got your own little hunting enclave there, doncha!? No wonder you have Creedmoor Long Ranger!
