45 Colt loads.

Post by Mzzlldrinpa » Tue Feb 26, 2019 5:34 pm

So I read alot here on the forum but, don't post much. I do however have a question. Is anyone running different loads for different distances. I do some silhouette shooting at three different distances and would like to hold on target for each. Currently I hold high or low depending on the distance. Thanks for any help.

Welcome to the forum from KC! There are lots of 45 Colt reloaders here (I'm just getting started with it), but I imagine they'll want to know what I'm curious about, such as "What 3 distances?" and "What projectile are you using?"

If the distances are hugely different, I don't know that you can fight the physics of bullet drop, but lay out what you're dealing with and that'll help.

Welcome again!

Good point Esquared. I'm shooting 50, 75, and 100 meters. Running a 250 grn rnfp. I have been using hp-38 and Unique.

Greetings Mzzlldrinpa, others will chime in, but, I'll give it a whirl. 50 and 75 meters, I'd stick with 8.0-8.5gr Unique with those 250gr RNFP[lead] bullets.I'm thinking for 100 meters, 8.5gr Unique should do. If you switch to jacketed, perhaps 2400 would work better. As I'm getting started loading the .45 Colt myself, thats the direction I've gone. mostly the Missouri plain RNFP, 250gr. Those work well. Hope this helps a bit.

I've been shooting Hornady 250 grain XTP's (jacketed) with 20 grains of 2400, I really like this load for my Henry rifle and Super Redhawk Alaskan and it's a pretty flat shooter. This is a high pressure load though and should only be used in appropriate firearms. Good Luck!!
