45-70 New bullets and new powder

Post by Ojaileveraction » Sun Sep 16, 2018 2:50 am

Got some 350gr Barry's copper plated bullets at the LGS and at the same time splurged on a pound of H4895.
Looks like I can get higher fill % at less pressure than the H4198 I've been using.

Last time I was at the range with my buddy that has everything. He chronoed three rifles for me. The 45-70 showed a 52fps deviation .
Thought it might be the <50% fill of those loads.

If you get a chance give those a ride with some Universal Clays about 16grs of it. My AW Henry really liked that load.

Don't worry about getting older and still doing stupid stuff. You'll do the stupid stuff as always, only much slower. Hold my beer and watch this.......

A no BS bear load. Your thoughts on a Barnes 400 gr fn using H4198 with 46 gr at 1854fps starting load. 32,200 cup.is the only data I've come across for that bullet. Data also shows it's for a Marlin load.

I see that combination of bullets and powder as a Ruger No. 1 load in the Barnes data.

45.5 is max for that powder and bullet in 1895 Marlin.

That's my favorite load. I'm shooting 16 grains of Universal under a 385gr GT Bullets hollow-point and my 1895g loves it.
