525 Beartooth

Post by Jrprock » Sun Aug 26, 2018 4:07 pm

I’ve been playing around with these things recently. So far I’ve been using RL7 and H322. RL7 has been my go to powder for 45-70 regardless of bullet. H322 seems to be better suited to these slugs. I’ve gone as low as 35gr and as high as 41gr. It seems that the groups got tighter the higher I went.

Recoil was......quite frankly....absurd. I was shooting from a lead sled at 100yds and while these will make a great hunting round I don’t think will shoot them from a bench much.

Btw, mine actually scale at 539-541. Oal is 2.55” and I’m using a Hornady press and RCBS chargemaster scale. Like this combo!

The attached group is right at 2”. I think I can shrink it some minus the flinch. Plus this gun needs a little trigger work.

very, very well understood .... over the years, I've hunted with some big boomers .... my 300 WBY Mag is but one example (84.5 gr of IMR7828 180 gr Nosler Accubond bullet) .... out of the box its recoil was brutal, it required several sessions to get the scope sighted in .... that said, I don't ever recall hearing the blast or feeling the recoil when a deer, bear, or boar is in the crosshairs .... since I wanted to continuing firing hot loads, I resolved to modify the rifle so as to substantially reduce felt recoil .... I've done the same to our Henry 45-70

Not sure which 45-70 Henry you have but in my CCH version I also like the RL-7 powder. I use the Hornady 350 FP and about 47 grains shoots it very well. Al

Don't worry about getting older and still doing stupid stuff. You'll do the stupid stuff as always, only much slower. Hold my beer and watch this.......

I have the steel, round barrel 45-70.

This is the first bullet that I’ve used that hasn’t been the most accurate with RL7.

I need to revisit the 350 Hornady. I played around with it some a while ago and never really fully developed any loads for it. IIRC, it’s a tough bullet that might be more suited to higher velocity.

I’m bummed that the 400gr Speer is no longer available.
