Sort of, Sambar don't actually have a closed season so can be hunted year round. Biggest trouble from now on is flies, while I have a cool room at the farm getting one dressed and into it before the flies spoil it becomes a problem.
Checked my game cam this morning and it is the first week since March I haven't had a least one deer on it for the week. My sheep are due to start lambing in 3 weeks time so a bit of preditor calling will probably be on the menu for the next few months. Should be lots of fox pups around.

JEBar wrote:after a great deal of research and pondering what has been read, I've decided to deviate from my firmly ingrained practice of loading our practice ammo to the same specs/standards of our hunting ammo .... the fact of the matter is, even after some highly effective mods designed to reduce felt recoil, our Henry 45-70 isn't fun to fire when using full power hunting loads .... consequently, it stays in the safe most of the time .... early on we found we did enjoy firing HSM Cowboy Action loads .... in reading various sources, it is reported to be acceptable to fire "trapdoor" level loads in our Henry .... we have decided to use 300 gr Nosler Ballistic Silvertips for both our hunting and practice ammo a search for a practice .... as a contrast :

our Hunting Load uses 51.5 gr of IMR 4198 which yields a muzzle velocity +/- 2,225 fps
fps
the corresponding minimum 45-70 Government load (per Nosler) is 47.5 gr of IMR 4198 yielding a muzzle velocity of +/- 2,022

our first attempt to find a trapdoor level practice load (shown below) loaded with 31.1 gr of IMR 4195 which, per Sierra, should yield a muzzle velocity of +/- 1,450 fps

per our ballistics program, the bullet trajectory of this load should be

-0.2" @ 25 yards, Zeroed @ 50 yards, -1.1" at 75 yards, and -3.3" @ 100 yards

OR

+07" @ 25 yards, +1.8" @ 50 yards, +1.6" at 75 yards, and Zeroed @ 100 yards

either of those should be fine for punching paper and ringing gongs .... my hope is this significant reduction in muzzle velocity there should be a corresponding reduction in felt recoil

the good news is, our first attempt loading trapdoor level ammo (as per above) was a pleasure to fire .... less felt recoil than our Henry 44 Mag .. 8-) .. the bad news is, the velocities chronographed were highly erratic ===> 1358, 979, 976, 1274, 930, 942 <=== none yielded close to 1,450 fps .... I noticed during the loading process that 31.1 grs left a great deal of empty space in the casing .... with such a wide variation in muzzle velocity, I have no clue how to set the scope .... question for those who have loaded mild charges, have you found that empty space can affect velocity .. :?:

Yes.
I suspected erratic pressure and last time out my buddy brought his chronograph and I got similar results as you did.

I'm trying H4895 with significant better fill rate and lower pressures.

How much crimp did you put on the bullet? The crimp or lack there of can greatly effect the total combustion of the powder charge.

earlier today I was able to test our next generation of 45-70 range loads .... 44 gr of IMR 4198 pushing a 300 gr Nosler/Winchester Combined Technologies Ballistic Silvertip .... the results are the best so far .... felt recoil notifiable but not harsh, I'd rate it as being in the ball park with 20 ga semi auto firing sheet shells .... average muzzle velocity 1745 fps .... per our ballistics program :

0 yds -1.5"
25 yds 0.1"
50 yds 1.0"
75 yds 1.0"
100 yds -0.0"
125 yds -2.1"
150 yds -5.3"

group shown below is from 7 rounds at 25 yards .... rest of target is covered because it contains holes from 44, 357, and 22 caliber rifles as well .... next step will be to load 50 rounds for group testing at 50, 75, and 100 yards .... if they group well with the trajectory shown above, at 100 yards, I believe we will have found our range load
