Casting for 45 big boy classic

Post by 2guns » Fri Jun 08, 2018 6:31 pm

Been doing some shooting with the supposedly .452 laser cast but after measuring they are .454. The Rimrock shoot so so but the laser cast much better. I was casting out a bunch at .452 and found a defective cavity in rear mold. I ordered a NOE mold 4 cavity today in .454 265 grain. Didn't have one for a few months in 255. I guess worst case I can resize to whatever. Guy at Noe told me this was the most popular mold for the Henry 45 colt. It's slugging out at .451.6 on calipers but going to have to buy a micrometer to get a decent reading. What are you finding in the 45?

I dont think there are many casting people here. I have done it in the past but I gave it up because I just dont have the time to do it anymore. I casted bullets for an 1874 Sharps rifle. I find it alot easier to just buy commercial cast and load those but I dont buy many of those anymore as I have switched to copper plated. I did however have good luck with Missouri cast and Leadheads from Kansas. I would think Missouri cast would cast or size 454 for 45 colt. Al

Don't worry about getting older and still doing stupid stuff. You'll do the stupid stuff as always, only much slower. Hold my beer and watch this.......

I read most of the reloading threads which are posted, 2guns, although I'm not a reloader, and don't understand a lot in the chats. Still, I know it's an important part of firearms and the experiences people have. Plus I do learn a thing or two.

So I cannot answer a reload thread very often. This time it was especially a tough post to understand....the subject matter was definitely Classical-Greek-to-me. I had very little idea about most of what you said!! ;)

I do apologize but I would have thought the Henry pistol carbines a lot more people wood use cast or cast their own just for money's sake. I also find a cast bullet with correct hardness is deadlier on deer hogs and bear than a lot of jacketed bullets. In the case of my 44 mag is a different story because I want all the velocity I can get and cast can't offer that like a jacketed bullet. The 45 colt I never push over 1200 fps so cast is a better option for myself in this rifle. Just my opinion. Don't want to sound smarter than anyone else because I'm as new to levers as I can be. Kept an old 30-30 Winchester as a truck gun for years but switched over to bolts and semi autos. Just this year got to really liking the levers and Henry has been my choice.

I cast all my .45 bullets. I use coww and size to .452 for my Blackhawk and Henry Steel 45 Colts. If I want to push them a little harder, I'll occasionally water drop a batch. If I want to shoot ro loads then I have a lot stored away that are checked. Haven't had any leading problems yet.
