I have a Lee turret press and I reload 45 colt and 9mm with no problems. I just started trying out 45/70 but the resizing die is putting a pretty good dent in the side of my brass. I am using starline brass and I am lubing them up good. These are new Lee dies. Any ideas? I'm running off to a meeting but I'll check in later for any ideas you guys might have. Thanks Much!!!

Too much lube can cause dents in your brass. Built up lube left in the die can cause dents.

I reload .357 brass using Lee Carbide dies. In four years, I have never used a lube with no ill effects. I didn't think it was necessary with carbide dies and straight wall cases.

No carbide dies for 45-70, they're not quite straight walled just slightly tapered. You have to use lube.

carbide dies, which do not require the shell casings be lubed, can only be used on straight wall brass .... been there, learned the hard way, 45-70 brass isn't straight wall .... it does look like it but it isn't .... hence 45-70 dies aren't carbide so prior to resizing, the casings have to be lubed ..... as noted above, lube can build up and dent casings

Ok-- I cleaned out the die and used the lube very sparingly... No dents!
I have always used carbide dies with no lube. I think that I was just a little over zealous in lubing the cases.
On we go! I'll let you know how things turn out.. I'm starting off with some 3031 that I have on hand and some 300 grain Hornady JHP's

Thanks Guys!

Hornady 300 gr JHP's are fine bullets .... if you are interested take a look at Nosler 45-70 Caliber 300 Grain CT Ballistic Silver Tip with Cannelure Blems ===> http://www.shootersproshop.com/nosler-p ... -50ct.html .... they are an outstanding bullet jointly produced by Nosler and Winchester .... the ones in the link are "Blems" meaning they might have a blemish in their finish .... so far as performance goes, they perform as well as one sold as first line bullets .... the perform extremely well in our Henry 45-70 and are cheaper to shoot

Im not sure what you use to lube the cases Greyhawk but I use a carters large ink pad. I put lube on the ink pad and lay the cases down on the ink pad and roll them back and forth. You can also just dob lube in 3 or 4 spots and spread it around with your finger before rolling the cases on the pad. Its worked good for me for many years. Al

Don't worry about getting older and still doing stupid stuff. You'll do the stupid stuff as always, only much slower. Hold my beer and watch this.......
