Original Henry Rifle Cartridge

Post by RanchRoper » Sun Apr 22, 2018 3:45 pm

Picked this up at a gun show today....no idea if it's rare or not, just wanted one. The collector guy only had the one in the case.

A 44 Henry Rimfire cartridge with the H stamped on the bottom. 8-) Shown with a 45 Colt one for scale.

Pretty cool to have. makes ya wonder how many Henry (and other) partial, or full old cartridge boxes are out there. I have a few old classics but nothing particularly rare or valuable. Well one sort of - an old nearly full box of Remington 'Rustless' .33 Winchester ammo.

That .44 is still a formidable chunk of lead to get hit with....wonder how many frontier critters, 4 legged or 2 were taken down with those.

You can bid for an entire box of 50 Winchester 44 Rimfire with an H stamp and in its original cardboard box on Gunbroker today. It's estimated at $3500 -- give or take. :)

they are scarce and expensive but, occasionally, you still see a few around .... as a bit cheaper option, there are 3 "Empty-Reproducton-44-Henry-Rim-Fire-Ammo-Boxes" on ebay listed for only $21 each ... https://www.ebay.com/itm/Empty-Reproduc ... SwTM5Ytyoa .... just think how nice it would be to have one to keep your bullet in .. :D

Yeah, I’ve got a spare 3500 sitting around somewhere. Dang, where did I leave that ?

Ya, maybe not....I found this link that talks about early Winchesters and their ammo, interesting read. The bullet I have is called a ".44 Henry Flat" cartridge. Some were pointy. I paid $15 for the bullet. Can't have a Henry 1860 and not have a .44 rimfire bullet to keep it company.

RR --- Based on CT's comment re. cost of 50-rounds of this ammo on GB, that would translate into $70/bullet, give or take.
So at only $15 for your bullet, I'd say you got a pretty good deal! :*)

I think I'll stick with my .22LR caliber Henry carbine for now.

At the gun show today there was an abundance of Winchester lever guns too. New, not so new and some marked a late 1800's. A guy could really go nuts spending money if he had any.

There was one these new in box as well...tempting, it sure was a shiny rifle!
