Be careful with the commemorative Winchesters - while pretty to look at most are not any more valuable than shooter grade models in standard configuration. I own two, and both have octagon barrels (which are more deseriable) one in 26" but my point being most have little intrinsic value and can be had for not much more than a nice standard grade Winchester.

Thanks for the tip. I won't be buying any more rifles for awhile; I'm investing in the stock market; Lead. :)

The original 45 Colt were rim fire too like the 44 Henry . The 45 colt wouldn't make a good lever gun cartridge because it need a bigger rim for the extactor to grab . The 44-40 was design and made for the 66 and 73 rifle and had a big rim . Just for your information .

Several years ago I was able to buy an original Henry Cartridge. It is one with the H on the back of the case.

Tx Gunrunner, how did you find out about the .45 Colt beginning as a rimfire? I know some of the early centerfire cartridges had inside primers that looked like rimfires. I have also read that the rim on the .45 Colt was made bigger when it was chambered in the Colt New Service revolver because the old thin rim would work for a rod ejector as in the S.A.A. but not the star of the double action.

Yes It is really a centerfire and it uses the rim to hold the prime charge . My original 40-70 Maynard was made the same way
