30 Caliber Deep Penetration Bullets

Post by JEBar » Mon Jan 08, 2018 4:04 pm

Barnes' solid copper TSX Bullet ===> http://www.barnesbullets.com/bullets/ttsx/ <=== and Nosler's E-tip bullets ===> https://www.nosler.com/e-tip-lead-free-bullet/ <=== have earned a reputation for deep penetration, uniform expansion with a high weight retention .... when they can get them, Midway sells the Barnes 180 gr 308 TTSX in boxes of 50 at what calculates out to be about $.78 each (https://www.midwayusa.com/product/10104 ... -box-of-50) .... Shooter's Pro Shop sells Nosler 182 gr E-tips in boxes of 50 for about $.44 each (http://www.shootersproshop.com/nosler-p ... -50ct.html) .... if I was going hunting with a 308 or other 30 caliber rifle .... as noted, both are outstanding bullets designed for deep penetration .... simply as a matter of personal preference, I'd go with the Nosler E-Tips .... as part of my research I spoke with Nosler Customer Service 1-800-285-3701 .... 182 grain E-Tips are not openly listed by Nosler .... they produce them specifically for Federal Ammunition .... the same load data given by Nosler for their 30 caliber 180 gr E-Tip applies to the 182 gr .... they did give a most interesting caution .... the solid nature of the E-tip puts more pressure on barrel walls than a standard lead filled bullet .... this is specially true for new rifles .... consequently, they recommend starting at a minimum load and working your way up monitoring for signs of pressure .... they recommend only loading up to a level that shows no signs of pressure .... in addition the ring cut into the bullet is not a crimp ring .... it is a ring designed to reduce the pressure on the barrel mentioned above .... he said Federal cuts two more pressure rings in these bullets after they get them from Nosler .... bullets should be seated to S. A. A. M. I. standards

I have loaded 150gr E-Tips in .308 Win for a buddy. He has killed a Nilgai, a deer and a Scimitar Horned Oryx with them...all one-shot kills.

I took a 300 H&H with 180gr Barnes TTSX to South Africa and took 14 animals ranging from Black Back Jackal to Eland...all with excellent results. This bullet expanded readily on the Jackal (tore it open pretty good) and also managed to fully penetrate both shoulders of an Eland.

its been decades since I worked up a new load for our 300 WBY Mag .... I rely on 180 gr Nosler Ballistic Tips for deer size game .... for elk size game I use Nosler's 180 gr Accubond bullets as my primary or Nosler's partitions as a second choice .... I'm planning to work up a load with their 180 gr E-tips .... in addition, for 308 & 30-06 using 150 gr E-tips .... although I can't see any circumstances where I'd hunt with them, I'm intrigued by the concept of working with a deep penetrating 30-30 round using their 152 gr E-tips ....the built-in deep penetration of E-Tips has opened a new world for loading 30 calibers

170gr Nosler Partition RN fully penetrated this bear from side-to-side...he was dead in 15 seconds from one shot.

It was a light load in a .308 that chronographed at 2,450fps.

I thought about getting some of the E-Tip RN, but the 170gr Partition works so well, I decided why complicate life?

Nosler's partition is most certainly a premier hunting bullet, for decades it has been the standard for hunting ammo by which others are measured .... I've seen its results on black bear, boar, elk, and deer .... at ranges much further than I can shoot, its groups have been more than accurate enough .... at longer ranges, accuracy of the ballistic tip and Accubond bullets is outstanding .... both partition and accubond bullets are designed to expand into consistent mushrooms while retaining 65-70% of their original weight with proven performance over a wide range of velocities and game .... E-tips are designed to yield uniform expansion with 95%+ weight retention along with superior penetration
