Stocking Up

Post by JEBar » Sat Oct 28, 2017 3:51 pm

historically I've not been one to horde ammo .... after going through the lengthy period not too long ago where many factory loads and reloading components were hard (if not impossible) to find, I've developed a tendency to overbuy .... historically, when I needed supplies, I'd go and buy a bit more than I needed .... we would load a few more than what we were going to use and when they were gone, I'd purchase more supplies so we could rebuild our inventory .... we load a variety of ammo for several different 30 calibers; along with, for 44 Mag and 45-70 .... when the last order of bullets arrived, I realized that I now have more bullets, primers, casings, and powder for every firearm we have than I'm subject to fire in many years .... actually, for the most part, more than I will fire in the rest of my lifetime .... that said, I have several orders for components that will be rolling in at various times over the next couple of weeks .... just wondering, am I the only one whose buying habits were affected in this way .. :?:

Nope. I've only been shooting since 2013 and reloading since 2014. I didn't have any idea that there was a drought of ammo and ammo components when I started my retirement hobby, but I quickly discovered that something had caused an eight year run on anything related to firearms. It was a shock, but I'm certain that I know now what was driving it, confirmed by the fact that since January dealers seem to have overstocked inventory and sales and discounts are common. In the meantime, to compensate, I bought rimfire ammo, bullets, primers, and powder anytime I could find it. I have enough of each to keep me shooting for a decade or more.

well understood .... as but one example, I haven't fired a box of 20 shells through our 30-30 in decades .... I now have 150+ rounds loaded, sufficient powder, bullets, and primers to load well over 500 more .... 100 new casing purchased a couple of weeks ago with 250 more due to arrive this week .... as a side note, I do plan to take it out this Wednesday afternoon and run 50 or more rounds through it

For darn sure, we will never take for granted being able to get affordable ammo and all we want, again. Like so many, during the worst of the ammo crunch, we bought up any kind of 22 LR ammo when we could find it. Now we have lots of so-so, cheap plinking grade 22 ammo that we really should shoot up. Be great for metal target shooting and the like, but out club range is paper targets, only, and it's hard for me to bring myself to shoot bullseye targets with cheap ammo.

In Canada, we are dependent on supply from the USA mostly for factory ammo. So you are not alone hoarding ammo, once my bulk order shows up I'll have about 4000 rounds of 45 Colt. Almost enough, not quite but almost. ;)

My favorite 22lr match ammo has not been available locally. I've been getting it online from various places. Come 2018 no more loaded ammo from online sources.
And additional procedures to get it in store.
So I'm trying to stock up now on that ammo and other more scarce.

No, you are not alone!

My current inventory (in part!):

325lbs of powder
120,000 primers
28,000 22 rimfire
15,000 metallic cases (various)
30,000 bullets
1,100 pounds of casting lead
800 rounds 12 gauge (various)

And I continue to buy more than I shoot...so the pile is growing.
