all tooooo well understood .... I'm partial to Nosler's and agree that the 300 grainers will take care of anything I'm likely to encounter .... should I get the opportunity to hunt with our 45-70 I wouldn't hesitate to use it out to 100 yards .... its certainly capable longer ranges but I've never fired it at something past 100 yardsRiverRat wrote:300 grain Hornady, Speer or Seirra's JHP's will do the job very well on deer sized game and black bears. Reaching 2000 fps is obtainable without crazy pressure spikes. But as my 63 year old shoulder keeps reminding me that cast bullets will do the same job with much less punishment. I hunt the NE PA woods and the 405 grainers do very well on anything that roams these parts.

I have around eight very clean kills on deer with the 45-70, and really no matter what weight bullet you choose to use, a good shot placement will put it down almost instantly with practically zero tracking. I have my own backyard range and I consider myself a pretty decent shot. I NEVER lost a deer due to my bullet hitting a small branch with the 45-70. I can't say that for the high power 30 caliber rounds.

Here’s a code for Midway. You get $15 off when you buy $100 or more. Pretty much pays most of the shipping cost. Just tried it. Still works. Of course, Midway doesn’t count the items on sale as part of the $100 needed for the discount.

you can go directly to Speer bullets an order them right on the site. They have the 400 gr jacketed in stock. This has been my hunting bullet for the past few seasons and served me well. Of course all have been complete pass throughs so no real expansion. but when you poke a 1/2 inch hole on 2 sides of a deer the bleed ou pretty quick.
other than that I have had great success accuracy wise with the lasercast 405 gr bullets.
