Speer bullets

Post by bandit1250 » Thu Apr 11, 2024 4:02 pm

I was getting low on Speer .224 varmint bullets and I saw Natchez had some good prices on them. If ordering about a hundred dollars worth they had a deal where the flat rate shipping was only $5. The flat rate saved me over $18 in shipping. On the first of the month I called in an order for the value pack of 1000 50 gr. TNT and a box of a hundred of 45 gr. and a hundred 50 gr. and they were out of 55 gr. soft points so I ordered 55 gr. TNT bullets in place of the soft points. I had never used the 45 gr. before and I wanted to try them in my 14" twist 222 Sako Vixen. Out of curiosity I weighed about 40 bullets and they weighed more consistently than some 53 gr. Match bullets from Sierra and Hornady. They weighed from dead on the weight or no more than a 1/10 of a grain under 45 grs. The Speer bullets are a little more than half the price of the other brands. I have used their bullets before and they have always grouped comparable to the other brands I use. Their 52 gr. HPT is a real accurate bullet but I have several hundred on the shelf so I passed on them for now. Speer is not as popular as the other brands but I have used their rifle bullets with no problems with accuracy or expansion. The Speer Gold Dot pistol bullets I use for reloading are fine pistol bullets. I don't believe Speer does a good job with advertising or they may be more popular. I heard a guy in a LGS say he won't use Speer bullets because they are in yellow boxes. :? Great reason to not buy them. I like their boxes. They make good boxes for storing small items to keep them from getting scattered in a drawer. Good for small fishing lures and hooks and sinkers.I hope to shoot some loads when the wind and rain gets out of here. Three rifles to shoot. Sako 222 Vixen, Remington 700 Varmint 223 and a Tikka 223 Continental Varmint model 595. The Tikka has a shorter throat than the Remington and I would fix it but I loaned out my throat cutting tool and I forget who has it. Everyone have a nice weekend and be safe. bandit1250

I like Speer bullets and shoot quite a few in the 30-30's and the Marlin 308.
Always accurate and have preformed well on the deer I've used them on.
Loaded a bunch of 300 Sav. with their 150gr Hot cor. One of those hammered a nice doe last season before I returned the rifle to my buddy.

I'm watching out for Speer "2011" for .30-30 reloads. These are 150gr HotCor. Speer website store a few weeks ago didn't have any. A few days ago they had them, but a bit pricey (~$32/100). Waiting for them to percolate through to a LGS. I've seen them elsewhere on the web for mid $40/100.

The 150gr HC is listed at $29.99 per 100 at Midway right now.

I've loaded the 125 TNT for my Garand, and in my dad's Rem 700 (30-06) and in my own (.308). Those bullets produce really good groups in everything that I've tried them in, and the best part is how inexpensive they are. I shot a 10 shot group at 100 yards with my dad's 700 that was well under 1 inch, and used that load to hit 5 straight turkeys and win the pool at a HP Silhouette match too. They were a topic of discussion as being under the radar for accurate bullets going back almost three decades, and apparently that hasn't changed.
I load the 50 TNT in my Rem 700V .223, with a 12 twist, and I've loaded them for my AR Service Rifles with barrels having both 7 and 8 twist rifling, and again, all shot every bit as well as "match" bullets.
I've loaded their 70 TNT in my 6BR and also in my 6mmARC, 8 and 7.5 twist respectively, and both perform very well.
Seat of the pants observation is that they all like being pushed hard, but let your own rifle decide what it likes.
I'm not a benchrest style shooter, and I'm sure you could get tighter groups with custom bullets in those scenarios, but those TNT bullets are hard to ignore if you're looking for an accurate bullet at a good price.

After testing quite a few different bullets in my 300 Blackout I settled on the Speer 125 TNT. BigAl here suggested it to me after his great results in this caliber in a bolt gun. At first I was getting average accuracy from the TNT’s until at Al’s suggestion I bumped the velocity up to max. Bingo! Great groups and will smack the Great Wild Pig Invasion from Canada.

Also many years ago I wanted a varmint load for my 30/06 and found the Speer 130 hollow point shot incredible groups. And that massive hollow point sure turned a rock chuck inside out

Thanks for that, but I don't shop Midway any more. I suspect their 3rd party payment processor of passing on my credit card information to someone in Dubai.
