Bullet choice for the 357 is important. XTP, HP type bullets may not get the penetration needed for larger bodied animals like Mule Deer. A Sierra Jacketed Soft Point or their 180gr Jacketed Flat Point are options.

The Barnes all copper bullets perform quite well and have good penetration at least out of revolvers. When driven too fast they at least maintain a good portion of their weight, loosing only the fairly light petals. But, that is not optimum performance and a WFN hard cast will then probably work just as well. I am not sure how well the Barnes .357 versions do out of a rifle, particularly with accuracy. I have not had good accuracy results with them in .44 Mag out of my Big Boy. I would like to see Hornady come up with a GMX version designed for revolvers and rifles (if possible) in .357, .44, and perhaps .45 Colt.

both of our boys hunt whitetail deer with their Ruger GP100 357's with 6" barrels .... I've seen how our handloads using Nosler 158 gr JHP's out to 40+ yards perform .... haven't seen one hit with the same load from our Henry BBS but I have no doubt they will do well ....

Speer # 9 manual shows a load using the 180 gr FN bullet intended for the .35 Remington for a .357 rifle load and the write-up says it shot well. I may have to give this a try sometime - if I can find the bullets!

180 grain for .357 yes but for the .35 Remington most stores might have one box in 220 grain. Been looking for years every time I am in a store picking up other stuff hoping I’ll stumble on a box but I may have to order some.

My point was why go to an oddball bullet designed for a different caliber, when the same weight bullet designed for .357 are readily available? My understanding when reading the post was a load using a .35 remington bullet to load a .357 magnum round.

Well technically it’s the same caliber (.358) but designed for a rifle cartridge. Being of a tapered, rifle design however it is a better design balistically and might offer some improvement in some rifles as a hunting round - potentially better accuracy also. If nothing else a fun reloading experiment.
