Older RCBS rock chucker

Post by Stets » Sun Feb 21, 2021 11:34 am

I recently bought an older RC from an older guy that is out of the game. The press is 100%. My problem is i can't get the primer feed to work for the life of me.. im sure its all in the adjustment of the feed tube holder.
Anyone have any tips, tricks or suggestions?

Hey Stets, welcome to the forum.

There are a lot of folks that will post tips and tricks. As for me, I have never been able to make an auto primer feed to work flawlessly. In fact, they are more trouble then not for me. I use a Redding Turret press and a Hornady LNL progressive.

You will find a lot of folks just use a hand primer (RCBS, Lee, Hornady, Lyman, Frankford Arsenal). Everyone has their favorites.

As for me, I have found the Lee auto bench priming tool works the best. After decapping, resizing and trimming (depending on caliber) I sit down at the bench and prime all the brass. It goes much quicker in the long run, and a lot less frustrating.

I believe but will not state for certain that the auto-prime feature you have is an accessory item to the press. Originally it would have come with a priming arm that slips into the ram and seats the primer. You would feed this priming arm singly. I’ll take a picture of my priming arm and come back and add it. I don’t use the press for priming and as RNG posted I just use a Lee hand priming tool.

Since you said your Rock Chuckar is an older model it probably originally came with this Universal Priming Arm. I checked my newer Rock Chuckar and it has a different priming arm that the one in the manual shown below. I also took a picture of my current press’s primer set up but so far it hasn’t transferred to my Ipad. When it does, I’ll add it.

Once you decide what direction you want to go, the only other issue is, find some primers ! ! !

Thanks guys. I run a lee classic turret press. I got the RC to decap brass to save wear and tear on the aluminum turrets. Also very useful for cast bullet sizing. Sometimes i use the full length resize die on it too.
I tinkered with the primer feed, but i think i am just going to abandon it. I can single feed primers into the arm if need be.

I have one of those and it works really well. I dont like any of the hand primers at all I always use the press. Take a pic of what you are having issues with and maybe I can help

Don't worry about getting older and still doing stupid stuff. You'll do the stupid stuff as always, only much slower. Hold my beer and watch this.......
