IMR 4831 in 45 70

Post by Stets » Fri Feb 12, 2021 8:59 pm

Someone recently gifted me am unopened 1# can of this powder. Looks like its for mid range center fire cartridges, like 270 and the like. I did find some load data for 400 gr and up cast bullets in 45 70.
Anyone have any experience with it? Amy pet loads for 45 70? Looks like it may shoot soft, kinda like trail boss

Haven't used 4831, I use either H322 43.5 grains or 4198 36.5 grains both under a 405 grain Missouri hi-tek Buffalo bullet. I like them both but between the two I tend to chrono a tad more consistency with the H322.

I've never used that either. I use IMR 4198 , 41 grs., over a Hornady 300 Gr, JHP. Works really well in my Henry H010 45/70.

4831 seems awful slow burning for the 45-70. In the IMR powders 4198 up to 4895 would be better velocities with the big bore. I think the 4831 could be dirty burning in the 45-70. 4198, 3031 and 4895 were all really good in my Marlin 1895 with the 22" barrel.

Stets, agree with the guys above, that 4831 is not a solid choice for the .45-70. What other powders do you have?

I found some older Lee load data that showed 42.2.gr for 1200 fps. Safe in any modern gun. I just dont wanna see the powder go to waste. Maybe i will try to trade it for something better.
I have plenty of other good powders for 45 70.

Imr 4831 works best with larger capacity bottleneck cartriges.
Use it in my 270's with great results.
If you do not have any 45-70 type powders, you may try to trade even up with someone who has.
Trying times right now for supply's that go boom.
Good luck, in what ever you choose todo.

God bless America, she needs it.
